Do you want a laptop but don’t mind having a tablet as well? In that case, something like Toshiba Satellite Fusion 15 L55W-C5257 might be an ideal computer for you. It has a 15.6-inch screen that flips back 360 degrees – which, in another words, means a tablet. Performance-wise, there’s a new low-voltage Core i3 processor, 6GB memory and fast 128GB solid-state drive under the laptop’s hood. Without further ado, let’s see what would such a package be able to offer for you…
Toshiba Satellite Fusion 15 L55W-C5257 features the Intel Core i3-5015U, a new dual-core Broadwell processor with 2.1GHz clock speed and no turbo. It’s a rather mainline unit, receiving ~3100 CPU Mark points – doing bit better than older mobile i3s getting a score ~2500-3000. All the common software, including YouTube and other streaming services, it can take without hiccups, but for much heavier stuff I’d recommend a stronger processor from i5 or even the i7 series.
The notebook comes with 6GB DDR3L (1600MHz) RAM. The maximum memory seems to be 12GB. Having that much would help mostly the power users, for everyday computing (and Windows 10) the default six gigabytes should do fine.
A true 2-in-1 laptop, this Toshiba sports a proper solid-state drive. As such, you can expect pretty smooth user experience compared to system running on a conventional hard drive. The storage size is of course bit worse with SSDs, this one featuring 128GB storage which leaves you around 100 gigabytes after Windows files.
Gaming in a nutshell
Gaming is not the strong point of Toshiba Satellite Fusion 15 L55W-C5257. Manufacturer decided to keep the price down and leave dedicated graphics out. That makes sense for such a portable 2-in-1 machine, but of course gamers wouldn’t like that decision. The graphics engine here is integrated to the processor, called Intel HD 5500, and is able to run some older games such as Counter-Strike: Go and Minecraft without issues. You can also try heavier types, but you won’t be able to keep up very high details. As an example, GTA 5 would yield only around 15-20FPS played on medium and 720p. I wouldn’t call that enjoyable but somewhat playable.
Anything special about the screen?
Toshiba Satellite Fusion 15 L55W-C5257 has a nice 1920×1080 15.6″ touch display. Full HD videos won’t be a problem here, but as mentioned above, you can’t keep 1080p on with many games. The display won’t detach from the keyboard part, instead it will turn full 360 degrees, allowing you to operate this machine in laptop or tablet mode.
What peripherals does it accept?
You would be able to connect three USB devices to Toshiba Satellite Fusion 15 L55W-C5257 at the same time, the laptop features one USB 2.0 and two USB 3.0 ports (the other one with Sleep and Charge). Connecting a PC monitor, even HDTV, is also possible to the laptop’s HDMI output.
One thing you won’t find in this computer is optical drive. These convertible models rarely come with one, so you must get an external DVD drive if you want to play around with discs. You can also try the SD card slot for files on memory cards, it accepts at least SD and MMC formats.
There’s no built-in Ethernet port installed, but the 802.11 A/C WiFi card will let you access wireless networks without problems. Bluetooth 4.1 should be supported, and if you want to connect Internet with cable you can always get RJ-45 to USB adapter.
Front-facing HD webcam with microphone is available, feel free to attend Skype video meetings.
Other miscellaneous things
Toshiba Satellite Fusion 15 L55W-C5257 weighs 5.1 pounds, no more or less if you compare it to 15.6″ laptops. But on tablet mode it might be a bit uncomfortable, often tablets are much smaller and weigh less. The 3-cell 45Wh battery should be good for around 4 hours web surfing before you need a recharge.
The LED-backlit keyboard comes with a numeric keypad on the right.
Toshiba Satellite Fusion 15 L55W-C5257 is a product for people who value convenience, as you don’t need to carry around two devices because this machine works in laptop and tablet modes. Most programs should run here without slowing down: despite being a low voltage (a.k.a. less performance) model the Core i3-5015U processor has been reported being rather quick, also the SSD – versus a mechanical hard drive – helps with programs loading and running smoothly. Gamers won’t probably like this computer due to integrated graphics, but users wanting a solid and modern convertible laptop should go far with this Toshiba.
