When I look at the spec sheet and price of Toshiba Satellite C55-C5380, I can say it looks like a good value. The price surely is affordable, and in the engine room there are Core i5 processor and 8GB RAM to make even a power user happy. But are there some reasons why you should not get this laptop? I’ll let you know, read on…

The laptop is useful for…

In case you’re an “average” laptop user (sorry for using that term), you most likely use computer for light entertainment such as video streaming and web surfing. You might also do stuff with MS Office, such as edit spreadsheets and text documents. For this kind of activities, Toshiba Satellite C55-C5380 is great. If we’re talking about its components, the most essential is the processor – Intel Core i5-4210U. It’s an excellent general use CPU (two cores, 1.7GHz and 2.7GHz clock speed, ~3400 CPU Mark score). The Core i5 is much faster than Celerons and Pentiums you find in entry-level computers so you can expect some snappy performance here.

Memory contributes to smooth use as well, the laptop has 8GB DDR3 low-voltage RAM installed. It’s not a problem to multitask with such amount of memory. As for the storage drive, there is a 750GB mechanical HDD available. A lot of files – for example ~150 DVDs – can be put there, so as a file storage this notebook works. The spindle speed of 5400RPM however isn’t that great; for better performance you could upgrade to SSD.

Would gamers like it too?

Toshiba Satellite C55-C5380 is not the worst laptop for gaming, but it’s still very far from being the best. The biggest problem is the graphics engine, it’s integrated on the processor which means subpar gaming performance. This Intel HD 4400 chip can run games that have simple graphics, such as Dota 2, Sims 4 and Minecraft, but try throwing fancier ones like GTA 5 and you will get very low FPS (~20) even when settings and resolution are low.

What devices and peripherals does the laptop accept?

Do you want to plug in a printer, or perhaps extra hard drive for even more file storage? Not a problem, Toshiba Satellite C55-C5380 comes with three USB ports (one USB 3.0, two USB 2.0) which you can use for those devices. And if you want to hook up external monitor, like HDTV, that works too since the laptop has a full-size HDMI output.

Network connectivity is basic: a 802.11bgn WiFi adapter with Bluetooth 4.0 support for wireless connections, and 10/100Mbps RJ-45 port for cable.

You’re able to write (and read, of course) CDs and DVDs with this laptop, it includes a DVD burner.

Card reader is available, it accepts SD, SDHC, SDXC, miniSD, microSD and MMC formats.

Webcam is embedded in the screen bezel.

Miscellaneous things

There is a simple 15.6″ display with 1366×768 maximum resolution – no Full HD support here. Also remember the screen is not touch sensitive.

Battery for this unit is a 4-cell 45Wh one, it’s said to be non-user replaceable which means you need to disassemble the laptop to replace it. You should get around 4 hours running time (lightweight use, web surfing) before you need to plug the notebook to a power socket.

Windows 10 Home (64-bit) is the operating system, like with most modern laptops.

The keyboard is a normal one, it doesn’t feature backlight.

Toshiba Satellite C55-C5380 is a laptop for those who want more performance than a basic notebook has to offer. It’s fast to use and will plow through all the programs you throw at it – that is because of the i5 processor and 8GB RAM. Of course, the hard drive is a small drawback, the notebook would be even faster with a solid-state drive. But you can’t get it all with a limited budget. Gaming performance is subpar due to integrated graphics. In short, it’s a decent rig for home and office use, if you belong to that lot the Toshiba should be a good pick for you!
