MSI VR Ready GE72VR Apache Pro-024 is one of the latest gaming laptops in the high end. At a glance it seems to give just enough oomph for the heavyweight gamers with its i7 processor and new GeForce GTX 1060 graphics card. But perhaps the devil is also this time in details… Let’s see!

Gaming in nutshell

To provide players better experience (and keep the company running), NVIDIA has created a new family of dedicated graphics cards. GeForce GTX 1060 is the name for one of those, and that you can also find inside this laptop. The engine comes with 6GB GDDR5 memory and VR support which is impressive, but even more important is the performance when compared to older models. Well, it is not as fast as GTX 980 but still faster than GTX 960. So in real life, the majority of games will give +60FPS on high/ultra settings and Full HD (including types like Battlefield 4, GTA 5 and Doom 4). Bear in mind the GPU can not be upgraded.

How about general performance?

There is nothing wrong with using MSI VR Ready GE72VR Apache Pro-024 for demanding apps, such as video editing or photos. To begin with its processor is very fast and almost expects you to use it for heavy work. Indeed, the Intel Core i7-6700HQ runs on four cores, a 2.6GHz clock speed and 3.5GHz turbo with ~8000 points earned CPU Mark. Memory isn’t any worse as there is 12GB DDR4 (8GB & 4GB) sticks, and upgrading to 32GB is possible.

There are two storage drives inside: 1 terabyte 7200RPM SATA hard drive and a 128GB M.2 SATA solid-state drive. I like this configuration because it gives you a lot of storage space on the bigger drive, but also good performance with the SSD. And by the way, the M.2 slot works with PCIe (NVMe) drives too if you want to upgrade!

What ports and connections do I get?

So you want to connect your great gaming mouse to MSI VR Ready GE72VR Apache Pro-024? Sure, there are one USB 2.0 and two USB 3.0 ports ready for that. Also USB 3.1 Type-C is there which works with many different formats. If you want to play through an external monitor that works with the laptop’s HDMI 1.4 and miniDisplayPort connectors.

Networking interfaces include both wired and wireless: Gigabit RJ-45 and A/C wireless with Bluetooth 4.0 support.

This particular model comes with a DVD burner and SD(HC/XC) memory card slot.

Other important things and benefits

The display of MSI VR Ready GE72VR Apache Pro-024 is ace. Users have reported it to be crisp and have good colors which I can easily believe: the 17.3″ non-touch screen supports Full HD, anti-glare coating and IPS panel type. The refresh rate is 60hz and sadly G-Sync isn’t available. A high-quality webcam is included, it takes 30fps 1080p video.

The 6-cell 51Whr battery will be good for about 2 hours when web surfing and paper editing. However, its subpar ~1 hour life under gameplay isn’t that desirable. So you better have power socket close when gaming.

The keyboard is full-color backlit.

A gamer with MSI VR Ready GE72VR Apache Pro-024 is a happy camper. The notebook’s incredible graphics performance together with the large 17-inches Full HD screen makes sure a player gets a worthwhile and smooth experience – no matter which game you have in mind. Also many peripherals can be used with this computer thanks to several ports, including USB 3.1 Type-C. The only real downside is the price, the unit costs an arm and leg. But if you can afford the MSI it’s surely the real deal for a demanding, modern gamer!
