MSI GP62MVR Leopard Pro-218 is definitely a fancy name, it would make you think that you have a great gaming notebook at your fingertips. Also looking at few specs, like the GTX 1060 graphics engine, makes a player smile. But perhaps the computer has something you should be concerned about? I’ll let you know…
How good is this for gaming?
As noted above, MSI GP62MVR Leopard Pro-218 has a real gaming card, the GeForce GTX 1060 with 3GB GDDR5 video memory. There are not too many engines that are faster than it, however the GTX 980 still beat this GTX 1060 slightly. Anyway, that is a non-issue for most players, take a look at these popular games and how do they run (settings of course ultra and Full HD resolution):
– The Witcher 3, ~50FPS
– Doom 3, ~80FPS
– GTA 5, ~60FPS
MSI GP62MVR Leopard Pro-218 doesn’t have solid-state drive, instead it boasts a big yet tad slow 1TB 7200RPM hard drive. For those indeed wanting SSD there’s a free M.2 (PCIe/NVME & SATA3) slot inside. Of course replacing the current drive is possible as well.
The processor is gamer-proof Intel Core i7-6700HQ. It hosts four cores, a 2.6GHz clock speed and 3.5GHz turbo boost for the benefit of your games and programs. All kinds of software shall bow to this processor’s will, including graphics editors and programming tools.
The 16GB RAM is very appropriate. The configuration is two 8GB DDR4 2133MHz sticks, and it’s upgradeable to 32GB. Yep, that’s a ridiculous amount, I don’t think any person really needs that.
What ports and connections it offers?
To plug in your gaming mouse or external drive is not a problem. MSI GP62MVR Leopard Pro-218 boasts three regular USB ports (one 2.0, two 3.0) and one multi-use USB 3.1 Type-C connector. You can use the latter with monitors as well, although there are also dedicated HDMI output and miniDP for connecting an extra display.
Connecting to networks and Internet should be smooth and fast. There’s Gigabit LAN RJ-45 port and A/C WiFi & Bluetooth card at your disposal.
Keep in mind that DVD burner is not installed in this unit – using USB-connecting external one is always possible.
You can operate memory cards with this rig, it possesses SD/SDHC/SDXC card reader for that.
Other things of importance
The 15.6″ non-touch display offers Full HD resolution which is pretty much the requirement for gamers. It has a matte IPS panel but unfortunately no G-sync support. Given the grand price the image quality and sharpness should be top-notch here. The screen also features a 720p web camera for keeping in touch with your buddies.
Don’t expect too great operating time from the 6-cell battery. It will only last 2-3 hours if you’re browsing the web, and like 1.5 hours under gameplay. Keep your friends close and power sockets closer!
The keyboard is of course backlit.
MSI GP62MVR Leopard Pro-218 makes a good notebook for all those interesting in new games and keeping frame rates high. The GeForce GTX 1060 does a wonderful job with Triple A titles, while looking at the 1080p screen on long gaming sessions is pleasant for your eyes. The processor-RAM side of things is great too – hard drive is just an old-school model, add SSD for extra performance. If you don’t mind the poor battery life, this MSI will only bring you good vibes and great gaming times!
