So what do you expect from a player’s laptop? Great performance for your games for sure, who would like to get lagging environment. Indeed, to combat the lag and stutter this MSI GL72 6QD-001 looks like a good choice – there is a dedicated graphics card and powerful processor included. But an important question also is whether the computer offers decent value or not…
The gaming aspect
It’s the GeForce GTX950M (2GB GDDR3) card that’s running the graphics show. The engine is beefy enough to be called a real gaming card, however there are still better units available, be aware of that. For example, the quite heavyweight GTA 5 would get ~35FPS if you used high settings and Full HD resolution – to make those frame rates smooth, a drop in settings would be required. Fallout 4 and The Witcher 3 on similar settings would get ~25FPS.
Other things under the hood
Processing performance is all good with MSI GL72 6QD-001. It’s the Intel Core i5-6300HQ you will find in this laptop, the processor’s most interesting features being quad-core setup, 2.3Ghz clock speed and 3.2Ghz turbo boost. It’s certainly one of the faster notebook units with ~5800 CPU Mark score. Expect this laptop to do great with heavy-duty applications such as Photoshop or Illustrator. Also the 8GB RAM (one DDR4 2133MHz stick) is solid, the maximum is 32GB with two sticks.
In the storage section you won’t find anything too exciting. Just an old school 1TB 7200RPM 2.5″ SATA hard drive. As you might know SSD would make this system much faster. But the good news is, the laptop also houses a free M.2 SATA slot in which you can put a solid-state drive.
Ports and connections
Feel free to plug in a gaming mouse or other useful peripherals/devices to MSI GL72 6QD-001, it has a wide selection of ports available! There are one USB 2.0, two USB 3.0 and one USB 3.1 Type-C at your disposal. Also HDMI-out and mniDisplayPort are included for an external monitor.
To connect this computer to Internet there’s a Gigabit Ethernet adapter with RJ-45 jack and Intel’s AC WiFi card with Bluetooth 4.0 enabled.
DVD burner and SD(HC/XC) media card reader are included.
MSI GL72 6QD-001 has an internal 6-cell battery so it’s a pain in the ass to replace it (if you want to perform such a maneuver). The battery lasts around 2 hours, not much, but it is what it is with these players’ laptops.
The screen should be good for gaming, 17.3″ diagonal with 1920×1080 resolution support. It’s a matte display without touch support. The top bezel has a 720p webcam installed.
Too bad the notebook doesn’t have a backlit keyboard.
MSI GL72 6QD-001 is a budget gaming machine and it shows in the choice of components. Essentially, the graphics card is the mid-range GeForce GTX950M to cut some costs – it can surely run most recent games with high settings and resolution, but the heaviest ones will need tad less eye candy. The screen is a huge 17-incher, probably enough for a gamer. For all software-related work this laptop works fine. I’d say that if you’re short of money but still want a notebook for gaming, this MSI will be enough for you!
