You probably already know gaming on a notebook is an expensive hobby. So there’s the dilemma, which laptop you should get? There are many to choose from and each of them says they’re the best. So we’re trying to make sense of these gaming laptops here and present you one potential target: the MSI GE72 Apache Pro-077. It features excellent things under its hood, such as the latest i7-5700HQ processor, SSD+HDD storages and speedy GTX 970M gaming card. The thing also costs a lot which might make you doubtful. But fear not, we’ll tell you more about this notebook’s value below which hopefully helps you in making the decision.
Is it good for running ordinary software?
Gaming laptops are always good for applications, no matter how demanding. Because the performance these notebooks have is huge. The just-released quad-core i7-5700HQ processor runs on 2.7GHz clock frequency and features a solid 3.5GHz turbo, and can be compared to CPUs with high ~8500 CPU Mark grade. Such a beast will of course drain battery very quickly, but in turn will allow any Windows-based program run fluently without slowing down.
MSI GE72 Apache Pro-077 has memory maxed out at 16GB (DDR3 1600MHz). There are two storage drives in it: 1TB 7200RPM SATA hard drive and a 128GB m2 solid-state drive. Such a setup lets you store heaps of games but also makes sure Windows will start up and operate very quickly.
How about games?
Gaming is the number one use for this laptop. The graphics card is the dedicated & soldered GeForce GTX 970M (3GB GDDR5) ready to take any game as of 2015. To be honest, upcoming titles should be a walk in the park too, considering how well it runs current games. For example, you’re likely to get at least 40FPS on GTA 5 played with very high settings and Full HD. Another popular triple A title, The Witcher 3, would get similar frame rates as well. Obviously, the majority of games require less than those two, resulting in far superior frame rates.
Anything special about the display?
MSI GE72 Apache Pro-077 features an anti-glare 17.3″ display with 1920×1080 support. Thanks to the capable graphics card you can actually keep Full HD on all the time. It has no support for touch, but that would be unnecessary for most gamers anyway I think.
I have peripheral X. Can I connect it?
MSI GE72 Apache Pro-077 has good connectivity. You can hook up four USB devices to it, there are one USB 2.0 and three USB 3.0 ports available. Connections for monitors include one miniDP and one HDMI output.
Internet is accessible through Gigabit RJ-45 port (known by the cool name Killer Gaming Network) or with 1×1 AC WiFi card. Bluetooth 4.0 is enabled too.
The laptop contains an internal DVD burner, no need for external drives here. To upload data from portable devices there’s also SD card reader available.
To chat with your gaming buddies – or enemies – the notebook features a front-facing 720p webcam.
Some other things to keep in mind?
MSI GE72 Apache Pro-077 weighs 5.95 pounds, not so much for a 17.3-inch unit but still far from being road warrior friendly. The best thing is to use this kind of gaming laptop at home and go on travels with lighter notebooks. The included 6-cell 55Wh battery will last ~3 hours when not playing, but of course gameplay will drop the battery life to hour or two.
The keyboard has backlit keys and a dedicated numpad on the right.
MSI GE72 Apache Pro-077 surely is an impressive machine. Its intended use, gaming, will be piece of cake. Thanks to the fast GTX970M graphics card any game will have smooth FPS on high settings and Full HD resolutions. Naturally, also any kind of software won’t have issues running. Connections are plenty, three USB 3.0 ports and A/C WiFi will come handy I bet. The laptop almost seems too good to be true, but once you see the price you’ll understand. This notebook is one of the expensive models, and not everybody can understandably afford it. But I must also say the value is decent at least, considering there are practically no things this laptop couldn’t do. So if you have the money and desire for the best, you might want to include this MSI in your shopping list.
