MSI GE62 APACHE-276 is a proper gaming laptop: it comes with components like Core i7-5700HQ processor, 12GB memory and an enormous terabyte hard drive. But the most essential thing, there’s also Geforce GTX960M graphics card located in the engine room – giving some real boost for your games, no matter how resource-intensive. But as this computer costs a fortune, it makes many wonder whether the MSI is actually worth the price. So without further ado, below you will find what I think about the value this laptop offers…
Does it work fine with all programs?
Strong performance can be expected from MSI GE62 Apache-276. Its processor is called Intel Core i7-5700HQ, an extremely fast quad-core chip with 2.7GHz clock speed and 3.5GHz turbo. In CPU Mark, it gets more points than about any current processor, ~8900 (for example, another heavyweight CPU, the i7-4720HQ, receives ~8200). The ridiculously high performance of this i7 means you can fire up any program and run it smooth – no slowdowns should ever happen. On the other hand, such a power hungry chip (Thermal Design Power 37W) might heat up a bit, so using the laptop on a solid surface like table is advised.
The notebook has 12GB DDR3L 1600MHz RAM, it’s distributed on 8GB and 4GB sticks. It might be asked why not full 16GB, perhaps MSI wanted to keep costs down with this unit. And quite frankly, 12GB is nothing to be afraid of – it should suffice for any use, including gaming.
For storage the laptop offers a 1024GB 7200RPM (SATA 2.5″) hard drive. A good thing, you should easily find enough space for your games. The performance of such a spinning disk drive is however not excellent, to combat that issue you can replace the HDD with an SSD. Somebody also commented there is at least one M.2 SATA slot inside however I can’t verify that fact.
What games does it run?
The GeForce GTX960M (2GB GDDR5) is a proper graphics card for gaming, hence MSI GE62 Apache-276 should run all games with high/ultra settings. To give you an example, Grand Theft Auto 5 gets ~30FPS played on 1080p and high/very high details. The Witcher would run at 25-30 frames per second on 1080p and high details. With Battlefield 4 on 1080p and max settings, FPS will be similar to previous games.
Any comments about the screen?
The display of MSI GE62 Apache-276 should be wonderful. The matte screen measures at 15.6 inches and supports 1920×1080 resolution. And that is not just on paper, because of the strong graphics card you can keep 1080p on no matter what you do with this rig. Touch isn’t supported, but there are good reasons for that: gamers won’t probably mind and Windows 10 works fine with a normal display.
Which devices can be connected?
You’ll be able to hook up four USB peripherals to MSI GE62 Apache-276, the laptop features one USB 2.0 and three USB 3.0 connections. MiniDP and HDMI outputs are also available, you’ll be able to plug in external monitor to those.
There are Gigabit RJ-45 port and AC WiFi adapter ready to connect you to Internet. Bluetooth 4.0 works, too.
Optical drive is installed on the right side, with that you can install games from discs you if you still have some legacy titles on DVDs. Card reader for SD(HC/XC) is available as well.
Chatting with your gaming buddies will be no problem, the laptop comes with a front-facing 720 web camera.
Other important things?
These gaming notebooks are rarely a good idea for traveling. That said, this exact model isn’t too heavy – it weighs just 5.29 pounds, pretty much the same than its “home laptop” counterparts. Another thing would be the 6-cell battery, I don’t think it will last more than 1-2 hours if you’re gaming.
The operating system is Windows 10 Home. Laptop material is aluminum.
I can recommend MSI GE62 Apache-276 for avid gamers. You’re able to play any game as of August 2015 with high/ultra details and decent frame rates. Naturally, any program you try to run will also work smooth as a silk. The 1920×1080 support can be fully utilized thanks to the beefy GTX960M graphics card. This all costs money, a person with no interest in gaming would be paying a lot for nothing. But yeah, if playing games is your cup of tea, this kind of MSI should ensure that your hobby can continue undisrupted for a year or two to come.
