Gaming has unfortunately never been a cheap hobby. Especially laptop gaming. Rigs that can run GTA V and other demanding titles with a lot of eye candy on cost money. MSI Computer GS60 GHOST PRO 4K-605 belongs to that category, offering a ridiculously high performance with the fresh i7-5700HQ processor, 16GB RAM and a dedicated GeForce GTX 970M graphics card. If you’re in the know, you can see the laptop has a label “smooth FPS” printed everywhere (on an invisible ink). But the flipside is, oh, the so unappealing price. So are you getting a lot of value for your money, which is a must with this kind of a premium product? Read on to see what we think about it…
As briefly mentioned above, the processor of MSI Computer GS60 GHOST PRO 4K-605 is definitely top notch. It’s a new Intel Core i7-5700HQ, a 5th generation i7 model sporting quad-core design, 2.7GHz base speed and a whopping 3.5GHz turbo. We expect it to reach better grades (over 8200) than another high-end chip, the i7-4720HQ, in CPU Mark tests, so it’s tough to find a laptop processor that’s actually faster than i7-5700HQ. Thus, there is basically no software or game on earth this monster CPU couldn’t easily handle.
The computer has memory maxed out at 16GB (DDR3L 1600MHz). It’s definitely enough for laptop gaming, just keep in mind going above that isn’t supported on this notebook anyway.
The storage solution is excellent: the unit contains both HDD (1TB 7200RPM) and SSD (128GB M.2 SATA). Thus, you can enjoy best of the both worlds: huge storage space, fast transfer speeds.
How’s the display?
MSI Computer GS60 GHOST PRO 4K-605 features a 15.6 inches non-touch display with support to 3840×2160 (a.k.a 4K) resolution. In other words, if your video source (streaming service, game etc.) outputs that high resolution, you can indeed play it on this display. The panel type is IPS, meaning you should get better colors and viewing angles than cheaper TN panels have. The refresh rate is 48hz which is worse than the common 60hz in notebooks.
What games does it play?
The Geforce GTX 970M (6GB GDDR5) is one of the faster mobile graphics engines. Thanks to it, MSI Computer GS60 GHOST PRO 4K-605 can play any game – yes, even heavy 2015 titles – with at least high details and 1920×1080 resolution.
Quite honestly, the vast majority will even work fine on 3840×2160 resolution if you want to give a try to the new 4K technology. With 3840×2160 and high details, GTA V would get nice 30+ FPS. You can calculate from that how other games would run. I can give you hint: flawlessly.
MSI Computer GS60 GHOST PRO 4K-605 includes three USB 3.0 ports to hook up your gaming mouse and keyboard. To plug in an external monitor the laptop offers HDMI and mini DisplayPort outputs.
Connecting this thing to Internet is effortless. It offers a Gigabit RJ-45 port and a 2×2 A/C Wireless adapter for networking. Bluetooth 4.1 is also supported.
There’s no internal optical drive and the laptop doesn’t ship with an external one. As such, you must get a DVD drive separately if you want to install stuff from discs.
This notebook has an SD card reader for uploading data from certain mobile devices. 1080p webcam is also offered, so prepare for high-quality video chats on Skype.
Are there other things to keep in mind?
Gaming laptops are often bulky but I’m hesitant to call this model one. MSI Computer GS60 GHOST PRO 4K-605 weighs only 4.2 pounds which is very light for a 15.6 incher – most of them are 5 pounds. Furthermore, this notebook is very thin, only 0.78 inches. Most 15″ laptops are more than that, around 1 inch thick.
The included 6-cell battery will likely last only ~one hour when you’re playing (closer to four when surfing the web etc). Also remember that when unplugged, frame rates on games tend to suffer. It’s good to have an outlet nearby at all times.
The keyboard is illuminated with colors of your choice. Also numeric keypad is included on the right.
It’s not often you see a laptop as expensive as MSI Computer GS60 GHOST PRO 4K-605. For its price, you could get three or four decent notebooks. But getting multiple laptops wouldn’t help if you want absolute power. And that’s what this MSI is all about. The new, brilliant i7 processor with 128GB solid-state drive will do excellent job not letting any program or application lag. But the real deal is the graphics engine, GeForce GTX 970M. It’s a high end unit, with enough oomph to run literally any game (as of Summer 2015) with high to ultra settings and Full HD resolution. Many will even work on the 4K a.k.a 3840×2160 resolution. Aside from the obvious poor battery life, there are no real disadvantages. Sure, the laptop costs a lot, but if you only settle for the best (and have some extra $$$), this MSI easily satisfies every expectation.
