Taking a quick look, I can see that gamers probably like Lenovo Y700 (80Q0001GUS). There’s a proper graphics card inside, bearing the name GeForce GTX960M. Also processor happens to belong to the i7 series, and solid-state drive will make sure programs are quickly loaded. But is there anything bad in this notebook? Probably yes, read more to find out…

How good is it for gaming?

Graphics processor in Lenovo Y700 (80Q0001GUS) is the NVIDIA’s GeForce GTX 960M with 4GB GDDR5 memory. A real dedicated card, indeed. You’ll find it plows through games new and old, for example GTA 5 will get a nice 50 frames per second if you put settings to high and 1920×1080 resolution. With some titles however, you need to lower the settings to get similar frame rates – that includes games such as The Witcher 3. Overall, it’s a very good card for the gamers.

Just keep in mind you can not upgrade the installed GeForce, so you’ll need to use that for the whole lifespan of this laptop.

How’s the general performance?

The processor of Lenovo Y700 (80Q0001GUS) is a popular choice for gaming notebooks. I’m talking about Intel Core i7-6700HQ, it’s a quad-core monster with 2.6GHz clock frequency and 3.5GHz turbo speed. The popular benchmark CPU Mark grades it at ~8000 points which is plenty for the gaming folk and power users as well. Any activity, such as Full HD video editing, isn’t too much for the processor here.

A lot of memory is offered. The laptop includes 12GB RAM, the configuration obviously being 8GB and 4GB DDR3L chips. Two memory slots are there all in all, so maximum RAM would be 16GB.

The system’s hard drive is 256GB SSD. I can’t say for sure if it’s installed on the M.2 (2280) slot or the regular 2.5″ SATA 3 slot inside, but indeed those two bays should be available. As it is, you can install a secondary drive such as large HDD here. It will help you with storing dozens of huge games, as the SSD alone might not be enough.

What ports and connections are there?

Lenovo Y700 (80Q0001GUS) doesn’t have a great connectivity for a 17 incher. For USBs, there are two USB 3.0 and one USB 2.0. The only video-out is HDMI, no DisplayPort or such is available here. You can of course use adapters so all hope is not lost.

Another thing, there is no DVD burner installed and it’s not even possible to put one inside. You can, of course, use an external one. The SD card slot might be useful as well, slip in a memory card and transfer data from portable devices using that.

The laptop offers 802.11ac WiFi + Bluetooth card for wireless network connections. Also RJ-45 port is available, sporting the 1000Mbps rate.

There’s a webcam installed, it gives 720p resolution for video.

Other important things

Lenovo Y700 (80Q0001GUS) has a beautiful 17.3″ display which supports 1920×1080 resolution. It looks like a glossy screen with IPS panel. Touch and G-Sync are not supported.

The notebook has a non-removable 4-cell 60Wh battery. It’s not a beast but will give 4-5 hours if you’re web surfing with dim screen. Under heavy gameplay, expect around 1.5 hours.

The keyboard features backlight.

Operating system on this is Windows 10 Home (64-bit).

Lenovo Y700 (80Q0001GUS) comes with a hefty price tag, but it is quite justified when you remember what you’re actually getting. In short, the GeForce GTX960M will run all games smooth, many even at 60FPS with higher settings activated. And needless to say, using any kind of program is a piece of cake for the hardware, too. The screen is a quality Full HD one, although keep in mind it’s 17.3 inches and as such, the whole unit is rather big. But in case you don’t care about portability, then this kind of powerful Lenovo should be a sweet deal for a serious gamer!
