Finding a low-cost and decent lapto makes people very happy, and for a reason. Not spending a lot of money and getting something fast and reliable is nice, and it might be that Lenovo Ideapad 310 (80ST001NUS) fits the bill. Positive reviews are many and some alright performance seems to be present. Let me introduce you to this model below…
The AMD A12-9700P processor isn’t too bad, it’s a quad-core 2016 model with 2.5GHz start frequency and 3.4GHz turbo boost. Its closest rival is probably the Intel Core i5-6200U, both getting ~3900 points in the popular CPU Mark benchmark. All in all, the AMD is quite fast and I bet power users would find it fast enough.
The total memory on Lenovo Ideapad 310 (80ST001NUS) is 12GB DDR4, and the configuration is 4GB soldered on board and 8GB installed on stick. According to the manufacturer the memory is already maxed out.
You’ll find a pretty uninteresting storage drive inside, a 1TB 5400RPM hard drive. Blast from the past indeed, there are no empty slots for extra drives so if you want to add SSD, you need to remove the old HDD first.
Is this laptop good for gaming?
Lenovo Ideapad 310 (80ST001NUS) does not possess great gaming performance because it doesn’t have dedicated graphics. The chip commanding graphics is integrated AMD Radeon R5, and the word integrated always means slow. So, what this means in reality, you can play GTA 5 (which is quite demanding) but you can’t use more than normal settings and low resolution in which case FPS will be around 35. Battlefield 4 and Tomb Raider will work too on conservative settings. But simpler games such as CS: Go throw smooth FPS with plenty of eye candy on!
Ports and connections
Don’t expect great connectivity from a budget laptop, it doesn’t have one. But the basic ports are still there. The usual set of three USB ports is present, although only one is USB 3.0 while two other are USB 2.0. Video outputs are two, VGA and HDMI, accepting a monitor or HD television.
Networking works two ways: a Gigabit Ethernet RJ-45 port for people who want to connect via cable, and a speedy WiFi 802.11ac + Bluetooth 4.1 card for the wireless way!
This thing comes with a built-in DVD burner, feel free to access discs. Media card reader which supports SD, its variants and MMC is also available on the side.
Lenovo Ideapad 310 (80ST001NUS) contains a 15.6 inches display, the maximum resolution being 1366×768 and the screen not responding to touch. Taking a look at the product image you can see the top bezel embeds a webcam.
The battery is non-user replaceable type, and the manufacturer says it lasts 5 hours on average. Many users have reported 4-5 hours so the advertised duration is close to reality.
The chassis is made out of plastic – so not prone to scratches, but might look worse than aluminum.
No backlit keyboard is available here.
Summing it up
Lenovo Ideapad 310 (80ST001NUS), for the most part, is a power user proof piece of laptop electronics. The quad core AMD and 12GB RAM can deal with many types of programs, be it as simple as web browser or something exotic such as Adobe Illustrator. Gaming performance is bit more problematic as you can not play new and fancy titles on high settings – the Radeon R5 isn’t a beefy graphics chip. But for the money this notebook offers good bang for your buck, if you’re not a gamer, do consider it!
