There are not too many laptops that are both fast and affordable. It’s usually an either-or situation: get a high-performance laptop and it costs a lot. But Lenovo Ideapad 110 (80UM0034US) seems to offer decent components and the price tag doesn’t look that bad to me. Indeed, it’s interesting to examine this notebook more…

General performance

It’s a bit older processor in Lenovo Ideapad 110 (80UM0034US), the AMD A6-7310 from 2015. The good thing is it’s a quad-core unit, the clock speed is decent 2.0GHz with 2.4GHz turbo boost. These things alone don’t tell the whole truth, but let me tell you the chip is comparable to Intel Core i3s, more precisely the 4th generation. A casual user processor it is, yeah.

The storage drive earns some minus points I’m afraid, it’s a 1TB 5400RPM hard drive which won’t be as fast as a solid-state drive. But one terabyte is indeed a lot of space, and if you possess some technical skills it’s not a problem to upgrade to SSD here.

DDR4 is the RAM type and 8GB of that is installed. Upgrading isn’t possible, the manufacturer says 8GB is already the maximum.

Does it work for gaming?

You’re not going to find a dedicated graphics card in Lenovo Ideapad 110 (80UM0034US) so it doesn’t work for gaming that well. The graphics chip is Radeon R4 and it’s comparable to older Intel HD engines. In short, it’s too slow for newer graphics-heavy games, for example Battlefield 4 would give you only ~20FPS if you used minimum settings and low resolution. Sports games like Fifa 14 and older ones like WoW still work though.

Ports and connections

Even though Lenovo Ideapad 110 (80UM0034US) is a big notebook the selection of ports isn’t shabby. It has just one USB 3.0 port and one USB 2.0 port for your devices. If you’re not planning to plug in peripherals it’s not a problem, but usually this big laptops come with more USB ports.

In addition, there is HDMI-output for an external display and RJ-45 port for network cable. The notebook also sports a WiFi card with 802.11ac and Bluetooth 4.1 support.

DVD burner is included on the right hand side. Also SD card slot is found in the notebook.

Miscellaneous things

So, it’s a large 17.3″ screen you will be looking at. This version is not a touch display and it has a maximum 1600×900 resolution – sadly no Full HD. For this price you could expect one, the current resolution puts the laptop at a slight disadvantage. The webcam on top is good for Skype videos etc.

More information about the battery life is hardly available, somebody just commented it runs out fairly fast. I can believe this considering the big screen and all. Don’t expect more than 4 hours out of it.

It’s not a backlit keyboard on this model.

Being a big laptop Lenovo Ideapad 110 (80UM0034US) should be suitable as a desktop replacement, to watch movies and do some image editing. However, remember the resolution won’t be 1920×1080 which can be a dealbreaker for power users. The performance is decent however not magnificent, especially the lack of SSD can hurt some people. It’s a decent buy for the money, just don’t expect to get a super fast notebook here.
