A starter laptop like Lenovo G50 80E3016QUS is tempting to many, for an obvious reason. It’s quite a cheap notebook. Affordable price in laptops doesn’t always mean low quality, although almost all the time low performance. Continuing the thought, entry-level performance might be all you need. So let’s see what this computer has to offer to you.

Lenovo G50 80E3016QUS contains AMD A6-6310 processor, a quad-core CPU with clock speed of 1.8GHz and turbo speed of 2.4GHz. It does a similar job than many Intel Core i3s, so basic home and smaller office use are well within its capabilities. There’s also an integrated graphics chip, good for rudimentary gaming, which I’ll expand a bit in the below paragraphs.

But first, a word about RAM. The laptop comes with 8GB memory which is a lot considering the price. Most often these cheaper models have 4GB RAM, so this Lenovo should give you an upper hand with performance and multitasking.

The hard drive is 1024GB big, which is again better than many competitors. Most laptops in this price range have just half a terabyte. 1024GB ensures you’ll (most probably) never run out of storage space, be it music, games or movies you store on the drive. Of course the speed of 5400RPM makes it less useful if you’re after Chromebook-like startup times. If that’s what you want you might want to do the swap for an SSD.

Display and gaming

Lenovo G50 80E3016QUS has a 15.6 inches display sporting 1366×768 resolution. It’s fine for casual users, but is lacking features like Full HD and touch support which many might find useful. Of course, for this price 1920×1080 never happens. Touch screen might be bummer for some, but the pre-installed Windows 8.1 (64-bit) works flawlessly without one, trust me.

The graphics engine Radeon R4 (Beema) offers similar performance than some older Intel HD models, namely the 4000 and 4200. This is not good news for gamers, since many 2014-2015 games would be too much for the Radeon chip, with frame rates dropping below 20. But if it’s older titles you’re happy with, this graphics engine is decent. CS:Go, for example, should reach ~50 FPS on lowest settings.

Lenovo G50 80E3016QUS has three USB ports. As usually, one is USB 3.0 which should be your number one choice. There’s also a HDMI output which lets you use the laptop through HD television or PC display.

The networking options include a 10/100Mbps RJ-45 connector and a 802.11b/g/n WiFi. Bluetooth 4.0 is also enabled which is good thing for mobile phone owners.

For additional data transfer the laptop features a DVD burner and SD/MMC card reader. There’s also HD webcam and microphone for video chatting.

What else to keep in mind?

The weight of Lenovo G50 80E3016QUS surprises me. It’s only 4.63 pounds, a lot less than most competitors with 5+ lbs. So for portability, consider that as a plus. The battery life is not listed anywhere, although I wouldn’t expect more than three or four hours with a single charge.

The laptop lacks backlit keyboard, a premium thing featured only in pricier models. There’s however a 10-key pad included, good for effortless numeric key access with accounting and other similar work.

Summing it up

In the beginning I wasn’t too impressed about Lenovo G50 80E3016QUS because of the seemingly poor processor. But after taking a closer look at the specifications, and especially the price, my mind changed. The CPU is fine for everyday computing, but the really great things are the RAM and storage amounts, which are a lot more than competitors usually have. The weight is also lower than with most 15.6 inchers. I don’t find anything to complain about for this low price, so I can recommend this Lenovo if you’re after an affordable notebook of excellent price/performance ratio.
