The technology inside gaming desktops has evolved a long way since 2000s. Before, you had Intel Pentiums and GeForce4 Go cards running your computers. It was good for those days, but surely games and components have advanced. A prime example of today’s gaming rigs is iBUYPOWER AM700-SL. You might question its usefulness due to an unknown brand, but it might not be smart to judge the computer right now…
iBUYPOWER AM700-SL in nutshell
The desktop comes from a less-known brand called iBUYPOWER. They are not a manufacturer, but an assembler of custom build gaming computers – just like this AM700-SL. The most essential components in this rig include:
– Intel Core i7-6700K processor
– GeForce GTX 1060 graphics card
– 240GB solid-state drive
I said above that technology has moved forward a lot. But one thing about gaming desktops still looks the same: the design. You can’t really make a mistake about the primary use of iBUYPOWER AM700-SL with all of its windows, red lights and neat black finish.
In fact, this particular desktop has “Element” design by the manufacturer. The windows are made of tempered glass which is more durable than regular glass – you don’t need to be extra careful about breaking it. Inside the case, you will find three fans with a red halo. They both look good and provide the essential airflow to the components.
The red iBUYPOWER logo is situated on the bottom, giving a neat finish for the design.
Indeed, the biggest question about iBUYPOWER AM700-SL is its gaming performance. The manufacturer has included GeForce GTX 1060 graphics card inside. It is the version with 6 gigabytes of video RAM. This is quite an important difference from the 3GB version since many games today require more than three. All in all, the GTX 1060 card excels at Full and Quad HD gaming, being between the older GTX 970 and 980 in terms of performance. You can expect +60FPS playing most games on at least 1080p resolution and high/ultra settings, those including GTA 5 and Battlefield 4. In my books, the GeForce GTX 1060 is a proper gaming card.
The gaming, and overall performance, is further kept high with the processor choice. Intel Core i7-6700K is the quad-core CPU you’re going to find inside. The clock speed of 4.0GHz alone beats most other processors, with the 4.2GHz turbo certainly helping. The important thing to note is the CPU Mark score which is very high, over 11000 points. I can surely recommend the processor for avid gamers, digital artists and other professionals concerned about performance.
Of course, the goodies don’t end here. You are going to find an ample amount of memory, 16 gigabytes, on this rig. It is the standard memory of today, the DDR4, not older DDR3. You are welcome to include more memory inside, I believe 32 gigabytes is the maximum for this on two RAM slots. However, the default sixteen GB is more than a player could ask for.
The drive bays have two units installed in them. There is a traditional hard drive, offering one terabyte of storage space and 7200RPM spindle speed. But it does not end here as also a 240GB solid-state drive is installed. With this dual drive setup, both performance and transfer rates are top notch. Windows 10 is smartly installed in the SSD. The case fits all in all three 2.5″/3.5″ drives, so you can even install one more if you want.
Ports and connections
There is a WiFi support in iBUYPOWER AM700-SL. Keep in mind, it’s not the built-in card version but an USB WiFi adapter. You will need to plug it in to the desktop’s USB port to enable the dongle. On top of that, you are welcome to use the Gigabit Ethernet port for cabled networking.
The desktop contains in total ten USB ports for hooking up your peripherals. The good thing is, the majority of those (six) are USB 3.0 – giving you the appropriate bandwidth for external drives and memory sticks. Then there are four USB 2.0 connectors as well that work fine for plugging in a mouse, keyboard and other non-bandwidth hungry devices.
The video card holds all the essential video outputs. You will find VGA, HDMI and DVI-D ports there. A three-monitor setup will work well, however I bet most gamers are fine with just one or two displays. At any rate, I recommend using the HDMI connector because it will generally produce the best image quality for you!
It might not be clearly stated here, but iBUYPOWER AM700-SL indeed contains an optical drive. It burns and reads CDs and DVDs. You’ll be able to use it to install games from discs if they are not available from Internet for some reason.
Some other things to consider?
As you might very well guess, the desktop does not include a monitor of any kind. You need to spend a couple of hundreds to get a decent gaming display for this. Gaming keyboard and mouse are however shipped with the computer, you’ll save a bit thanks to that!
Windows 10 64-bit is the Home version, not the Professional. This is just for your information, there are basically no implications about this for home or gaming use.
From what I read from other people who have bought this computer, any part of it can be easily upgraded.
iBUYPOWER AM700-SL is a desktop mostly worthy of praise. It does not fail a gamer no matter what title he plans to throw at it. The GeForce GTX 1060 card is a professional’s choice and especially playing at 1080p resolution will be a walk in the park. If I was to complain about something it would be the price, however to get any gaming desktop you should be ready to spend some extra dough!
