iBuyPower AM-FX01 is a ready-to-go gaming desktop, equipped with AMD quad-core processor and a dedicated graphics card. Price is very affordable, in the same category than regular home desktop I’d say. But can you really get a decent gaming rig for this low price? Hard to say yet, let’s take a closer look at this unit below…

The strong points are?

Well, many components in iBuyPower AM-FX01 should be adequate for gaming. For example, the AMD FX-4300 processor offers quad-core performance with a nice 3.8GHz clock speed and a whopping 4.0GHz turbo. It must be said though, that it gets only 4600 points in CPU Mark. It’s not a great score, considering some powerful laptop processors easily surpass that. But luckily, gaming is more graphics than processor intensive activity, so this kind of CPU wouldn’t be a bottleneck for players.

Another thing that should suffice is the RAM. There’s 8GB DDR3 memory available, just the right amount for gaming. Plus, there are either two or four memory slots on the motherboard, meaning the maximum supported memory is 16GB or 32GB. Hard drive however isn’t the most gamer-friendly item, it’s a regular 500GB (5400RPM) drive. You know what to do if you want more performance: take it out and put a solid-state drive in place.

Any shortcomings?

It’s unfortunate that the most important component for gaming, the graphics card, is not too powerful in iBuyPower AM-FX01. Sure it’s a dedicated card, called GeForce GT 730 with 2GB GDDR5 memory, but in GPU Mark it receives a low 930 score – for example the integrated Intel HD 5500 gets 560, and the dedicated mid-range gaming card GTX960M receives 1600 points.

What this means in reality? Well, you need to use lower resolution and/or settings with many newer games. For example, GTA will get ~35FPS played on medium details and 720p. Minecraft on the other hand works smooth on 1080p and maximum settings.

What peripherals can be connected?

The product page of iBuyPower AM-FX01 mentions three USB 3.0 ports, that’s probably right but I’m pretty sure there are USB 2.0 ports available as well. Video outputs should include HDMI-out, DVI-D and VGA. DVD burner is installed as well.

For Internet connection you can use the WiFi adapter, it supports the 802.11ac standard. I’m sure also RJ-45 port is available in the back panel.

Other things you should know about

The operating system here is Windows 10. Sadly expansion slots are not known, but assuming the graphics card is installed on a PCI-e x16 slot, you could remove the card and put a beefier one in.

Remember that monitor isn’t included, you must get that separately.

Summing it up

iBuyPower AM-FX01 is a cheap gaming desktop. Now, cheap and gaming don’t always go so well together – components meant for players are indeed expensive. In this desktop, the processor and RAM surely are gamer-friendly, but the most important thing – graphics card – is far from excellent. Sure, you can play any game you like, but not using maximum settings and fancy 1080p resolution. Hence, this rig is good for casual gamers who don’t insist on having full eye candy with every game.
