HP 15-g014dx is an entry-level addition to the HP’s line of touchscreen-enabled laptops. Besides the obvious, the notebook features AMD A8 -series CPU, Windows 8.1 and a regular 500GB hard drive. Read on to find more what we think about this laptop!

The main things

The 15.6″ touch display of this HP features a 1366×768 resolution, allowing for basic use, be it at home or in small office. It also works seamlessly with Windows 8.1 due to new touch features in the Microsoft’s latest operating system.

What comes to performance, HP TouchSmart 15-g014dx is a rather capable budget laptop. The processor is called AMD A8-6410, a quad-core APU (Accelerated Processing Unit) with base speed of 2.0GHz and turbo speed of 2.4GHz. According to benchmark tests, its main competitor would be Intel Core i3. Having similar performance to those i3s, this AMD certainly suffices for most computing tasks – be it lightweight or multitasking efforts.

There is 4GB DDR3L memory installed on one DIMM. The manual says there are zero accessible memory slots, so installing more memory is not possible on this model.

For storage you’ll get a basic 500GB hard drive with 5400RPM speed. That size is very common in budget laptops, so it’s not really better or worse than the others. Nonetheless, that drive is able to hold hundreds of movies and tens of thousands of smaller files like music and images. Speed’s not on par with modern storage drives (mainly SSDs) but you can’t get everything on an affordable laptop.

Quick gaming overview

As the processor of HP TouchSmart 15-g014dx is actually an Accelerated Processing Unit, it also houses a graphics engine, this time called Radeon R5 (Beema). It’s an integrated chip performing accordingly, and could be compared to mid-range Intel HD Graphics cards. This translates to acceptable gaming performance on old games – like the popular World of Warcraft and Minecraft – if you’re patient enough to keep the settings to minimum. The newer and more demanding the game, the worse the situation, and titles like Ryse: SoR, Watch Dogs and Thief would get fewer than 20 FPS no matter what settings you used.

About connections

The connectivity of HP TouchSmart 15-g014dx is typical for a cheap(ish) notebook. There are the obligatory USB ports, two USB 2.0 and one USB 3.0 to be precise. Output for HDMI is also provided – allowing connection to a HD television.

Networking includes a 10/100Mbps Ethernet port and a regular WiFi adapter. Bluetooth is not supported.

DVD burner is available on the right hand side. For additional storage and data transfer, you can also use the SD media card reader.

The installed webcam offers HD quality video, and together with digital microphone lets you participate in video meetings on Skype and other similar programs.

Are there other things to keep in mind?

Sure, the weight, that is 5.34 pounds on this model. For a 15.6″ laptop sporting a touchscreen that’s an average amount. The manual promises battery a 4 hour life, which should be quite close to reality.

The keyboard comes with numeric keypad on right.

You’ll get a free 30-day trial for McAfee anti-virus program.

Final thoughts

HP TouchSmart 15-g014dx offers a touch display and baseline performance at a comfortable sub 500 dollars price point. There’s nothing the laptop couldn’t do for everyday users, and also gaming would be feasible option, provided you stay away from the latest titles. If it’s a touchscreen notebook you’re looking for, you might as well go for this HP.
