2-in-1 laptops come in many forms – one of them is HP Spectre x2 12t-a000, a notebook that has a detachable screen. Thus, you’re going to get both laptop and tablet if you buy this one. But is it enough to justify the price? Perhaps there are some bad things about the item you should know before…

Who is it good for?

Obviously, people who value functionality would probably dig this HP Spectre x2 12t-a000. It has a 12-inches touchscreen (quite small, mind you!) that you can detach from the keyboard part. This turns the laptop into a tablet. In addition, the screen supports 1920×1080 resolution which is always nice, however in this small display it can be bit of an overkill. Another welcome feature is the IPS panel type: you’re bound to get around 180 degree viewing angles with that.

The notebook is good for daily computing, it has a decent Intel Core m3-6Y30 processor running the show. Its essential features are 0.9Ghz clock speed, 2.2Ghz turbo boost and a dual-core setup – CPU Mark score being around 3000. Admittedly, the system’s memory isn’t that good, just 4GB, and it’s soldered on board so the RAM can’t be upgraded.

The storage section is excellent, a 128GB SATA 3 (M2.2280) solid-state drive speeding the system up.

Who is it bad for?

A gamer wouldn’t want to get HP Spectre x2 12t-a000. The notebook suffers from the same “condition” that all these cheaper models: an integrated graphics engine which leads to poor gaming performance. The Intel HD 515 chip can run some games but in exchange you need to be easy on the settings. To give you an example, the much-played GTA 5 runs at a subpar ~25FPS on low settings and 720p. Of course you’ll get much better frame rates with older titles, such as Diablo 3 that’s smooth even when using high presets.

Miscellaneous & important things

There is some information available about the battery of HP Spectre x2 12t-a000. It’s a non-removable 3-cell 42Whr unit which should last around 8 hours under web surfing.

Ports include two USB 3.0 Type-C connectors. RJ-45 isn’t present but there’s a dual-band A/C WiFi + Bluetooth 4.0 adapter at your disposal.

Optical drive is not installed because there’s no space for one inside. You can plug one to the USB port or use the media card reader, it supports SD type cards.

As far as I know, the laptop comes with a rear-facing Intel RealSense 3D camera and also a front-facing traditional webcam (for Skype videos and such).

The keyboard part features backlight.

HP Spectre x2 12t-a000 is a decent laptop for home and even power users. Performance-wise, it boasts a snappy 6th generation processor and a solid-state drive, so you should expect smooth operations of the system in general. That said, gaming can be problematic due to integrated graphics (yet if you choose low settings you should be fine). The essential thing with this unit is the detaching screen – if that is what you want (= a full blown tablet), choosing this HP should be a good idea for you.
