HP Pavilion 15-ak099nr, a signature edition gaming laptop, interesting. There should be very little bloatware, and also a proper graphics card to keep the players happy. But what else are there, and would it be a good idea to choose this computer at all..?
A fast processor, that’s surely what you find in HP Pavilion 15-ak099nr! It’s Intel Core i7-6700HQ, a monster of four cores, 2.6GHz clock speed and 3.5GHz turbo boost. Indeed, one of the better laptop processors, it manages to get 8000 points in CPU Mark – compare to that to, for example, i5-5200U of 3500 points. Programs heavyweight and light will run flawlessly. Also the 8GB default memory is plenty, just keep in mind it’s one slot only so memory can not be upgraded.
Hard drive is not the best you can get, just 1TB 5400RPM model. It will give you a lot of storage space, terabyte is same than 200 DVDs. But it’s a little slow model compared to new SSDs – you can install one if you’re tech-savvy, just remove the current HDD first.
The gaming aspect
HP Pavilion 15-ak099nr has GeForce GTX950M responsible for the graphics, it features 2GB dedicated VRAM. It’s not the fastest laptop gaming card but is sufficient for keeping settings and FPS rather high. A real life example, you could put high settings and Full HD resolution and enjoy ~30 frames per second on Grand Theft Auto 5. Battlefield 4 would reach more than that, closer to 40-50FPS.
Ports and connections
Ports of HP Pavilion 15-ak099nr aren’t too exciting but alright for day-to-day use: two USB 3.0, one USB 2.0 and one HDMI-out are at your disposal. Networking you can choose between RJ-45 (100Mbps) and WiFi (802.11bgn with Bluetooth support).
A DVD burner is included, using discs is not a problem. Also memory card reader is there, it’s good for transferring small to medium amounts of data from devices such as digital cameras.
Other features and benefits for you
The laptop has a gorgeous 15.6″ Full HD (1920×1080) touch display; a lot of screen estate is ensured. The panel type is professional-grade IPS, In-Plane Switching, giving viewing angles of around 180 degree. There’s a front-facing webcam installed in the screen bezel as well.
The battery on this model, a 4-cell 48Whr one, would last around 6 hours if under lightweight use. A good feature, it’s also a replaceable battery.
The keyboard is backlit. Operating system is Windows 10 Home (64-bit).
Summing it up
There might be a good reason to get HP Pavilion 15-ak099nr if you dig PC gaming but don’t want to spend 1500 dollars for a full-blown gaming laptop. Because on this rig, you’re able to play any game there currently exists, and many will run fine with medium to high settings. In addition, all types of software will be a smooth sail due to capable processor. Don’t forget the Full HD, IPS-based 15.6″ display. Lack of SSD would be the biggest disadvantage.
