Do you think a Pentium-powered convertible laptop would be enough for you? In that case, take a closer look at HP Pavilion 11-k120nr. It offers basic performance and features a screen that turns the computer into a tablet. It’s not a very powerful computer, but might be that is perfectly fine for you…

General performance

In the engine room of HP Pavilion 11-k120nr you will find various budget components. For example, Intel Pentium N3700, a quad-core processor released in 2015 offers a low 1.6GHz clock speed and 2.4GHz turbo. Those things alone don’t tell too much about the performance, but benchmark tests do: in CPU Mark (a trusted processor benchmark) this Pentium gets ca. 1800 points. That’s considerably less than 4th Generation Intel Core i3s of ~2500 points, suggesting it’s lightweight use this laptop is most suitable for.

Neither the storage drive is a monster here. It’s a 500GB hard drive and spindle speed is the regular 5400RPM. It’s much slower than a solid-state drive, yet if you’ve never used one, you don’t obviously notice any slowness. In any case, you can replace the hard drive with a SATA 3 SSD if you wish.

One 4GB DDR3L memory stick is installed as RAM. The specifications warn that memory slot is not user accessible but I’m sure if you know what you’re doing, you can get there. Thus, the most memory this HP takes is 8GB.

Is it good for players?

You can’t get a decent gaming laptop for this price. Fast graphics cards cost a lot so they’re left for pricier notebooks. Instead of such a card, this HP relies on an integrated graphics engine known as Intel HD Graphics. It’s not going to work with fancy games like Grand Theft Auto 5 or Far Cry 4. That said, lackluster games like Minecraft, Team Fortress 2 and Sims 4 can be played with low to medium settings.

Connections and ports

The display of this HP is small, but there’s HDMI-out on the side which you can use to connect a larger monitor (such as HDTV) and use the laptop through that. Also printers, keyboards and other common devices can be connected to the one USB 2.0 and two USB 3.0 ports here.

You can reach networks and Internet with the built-in n-type WiFi & Bluetooth card, and also the 100Mbps RJ-45 jack can be used for that.

A way to transfer data locally from and to this computer would be the SD card slot. Due to size limitations, there’s no internal DVD burner in this machine.

One webcam is available, a front-facing cam, it works alright for snapping photos and shooting videos.

Miscellaneous things

The 11.6 inches screen (1366×768 resolution and IPS panel) means the unit is very compact. It weighs just 3.2 pounds, that’s good news for road warriors. In addition, you don’t need separate laptop and tablet since this HP works in both modes. The 2-cell 32Whr battery should last 5-6 hours before you need to recharge it.

Windows 10 Home (64-bit) is the operating system, it is pre-installed on the hard drive.

The keyboard is not backlit.

HP Pavilion 11-k120nr is a simple laptop for people that value the multifunction approach and light weight. The components are able to handle daily programs without issues, and you can store a big bunch data on the hard drive. If you want a solid companion for your travels, this HP would be something to think about.
