Are you not happy with the performance a simple Celeron based budget laptop offers? In that case, you need a beefier processor. Like Core i7 which the HP ENVY M7-K010DX notebook has. Of course, the CPU is not the whole story, and choosing a laptop should be based on other criteria as well. So let’s see how great a fit this computer would be for you!
Intel Core i7-4710HQ is a powerful processor. It has four cores and a clock speed of up to 3.5GHz. It’s hard to get a faster CPU than this, so using this one for any application you could ever think of is feasible. Emphasis is on demanding software, because daily computing works also on lesser (cheaper) processors. This i7 also offers Intel HD 4600 graphics engine which can be used for a variety of games.
HP ENVY M7-K010DX has 12 gigabytes memory installed, a rather unusual but still respectable amount for a laptop. The system can hold up to 16GB, but chances are you don’t have to upgrade the default RAM: most notebooks come with only half of this memory and operate without problems.
The HP features a hard drive allowing for 1024GB storage. Smaller files, like photos or music files, could easily be stored there in tens of thousands. If you want to tinker, you can of course swap this slowish 5400RPM drive for an SSD to get much smoother user experience – at the expense of a small storage size a solid-state drive possesses, of course.
Display and graphics
For Windows 8.1 (64-bit), the touch display of HP ENVY TouchSmart M7-K010DX is a good companion. It is 17.3 diagonal and what is best, features a Full HD (1920×1080) resolution. As such, even power users should find this screen enjoyable.
Together with the i7 processor, Intel HD 4600 graphics unit is powerful enough for most games, provided you don’t up the resolution and eye candy a lot. Most 2014 titles should reach at least 20FPS on low settings, while the popular Battlefield 4 should run on ~40FPS. The situation is of course better if the game is old, and Minecraft, Counter-Strike: Go and other less fancy titles shouldn’t have problems even on medium to high settings.
HP ENVY M7-K010DX comes with three USB ports like most laptops, but thankfully all them are USB 3.0. For those who want to use a PC monitor or HDTV with their HP, this notebook also features a HDMI output.
Networking consists of a Gigabit Ethernet (RJ-45) port and an excellent 2×2 802.11ac WiFi adapter. Bluetooth 4.0 is also supported.
Working with discs is possible on this laptop since it has a built-in DVD burner. Another means of data storage & transfer is also available with the SD media card reader.
For video conferencing and chatting this HP has a front-facing HD-quality webcam and microphone.
Anything else to keep in mind?
There’s a compromise to be made when you choose a laptop with big screen. And that is the weight, which is 7 pounds with HP ENVY M7-K010DX. It’s not easy to carry around, so road warriors should look for a lighter option. The basic battery isn’t good news for on-the-go computing either, giving only sub-standard three (or four tops) hours operating time.
The keyboard in this model is backlit and it comes with a 10-key pad on the right.
This model is not a signature edition, thus it comes with a bunch of pre-installed programs. It’s also known as bloatware, harmless but slightly annoying. Uninstalling that helps.
HP ENVY TouchSmart M7-K010DX is a powerful workhorse for people who want performance, not portability. The Core i7 processor is Intel’s flagship, and no task is too tough for it. The screen is also rather big and has resolution of 1920×1080 which is definitely a hot feature. Of course, at 7 pounds weight and poor 3 hours battery life this rig is not a great fit for travelers. Everybody else should find this laptop satisfy their power-hungry needs well!
