Is it an entry-level desktop that you desire? In that case, you might’ve been checking out the HP 450-010. It’s not too powerful a computer, but on the other hand, it costs only pennies. You should be able to use it for common programs and applications like web surfing and YouTube, but let’s see what more it can do, and if it offers good value to begin with…

Does it have good performance?

The processing power of HP 450-010 is rather decent. It has Intel Core i3-4170, a 4th generation dual-core processor sporting a nice 3.7GHz clock speed. If you take a look at benchmarks, for example CPU Mark, you’ll notice the chip gets ~5200 points in that test. It’s definitely enough for daily use, but should also get you started with more exotic programs, such as graphics editors or programming environments if you wish.

The memory situation is however not so good. The desktop features just 4GB DDR3-type memory. It works wonders for home users, but in case you’re a friend of multitasking or those heavier programs, having more memory would be ace. Luckily, you can always upgrade the RAM: the HP has two DIMM sockets supporting up to 16GB memory.

The storage section is just something you could expect: a huge, 1TB SATA hard drive working at 7200RPM spindle speed. The motherboard has no M.2 connectors but there seems to be three SATA connectors for extra drives.

Can I run games?

Sure you can run games on HP 450-010 if you can also accept less detailed graphics and lower resolutions. That’s because the computer is very cheap, it doesn’t have any dedicated graphics engine. All it has is the integrated Intel HD 4400 chip. Here are some FPS and setting examples that it can do:

– Grand Theft Auto 5, normal settings and 720p, 25FPS
– Minecraft, low settings, ~50FPS
– League of Legends, high settings, +60FPS

What connections does it have?

HP 450-010 hosts various ports so you can plug in your favorite devices. There are only two USB 2.0 ports in the front, but the back has more: two USB 2.0 and two USB 3.0 there. In addition, VGA and HDMI-out connectors are available, hence connecting two monitors simultaneously works.

There’s a 1000Mbps Ethernet LAN port (RJ-45) in the back panel for network connectivity. But you don’t entirely have to rely on cable, the desktop also has a built-in WiFi (b/g/n standard) card installed.

Of course, a DVD burner is there for dealing with discs. SD card reader is available as well, next to the optical drive, you can put in memory cards and transfer data that way, too.

Something else to keep in mind?

Inside, on the mainboard, there’s an unoccupied PCI-e x16 socket. You can install a slim graphics card there. Don’t forget to check the power requirements, the PSU outputs 180W only.

Just know that this unit doesn’t come with a monitor, you’ll have to get that some other way. However, USB mouse and keyboard are included.

Operating system is Windows 8.1 (64-bit). You can upgrade that to Windows 10 for free.

HP 450-010 certainly isn’t an exciting or fancy computer. It’s a very plain model with low-end components and minimal features. However, the price is very low too, and there’s nothing such a simple desktop couldn’t do for a web surfer, student or perhaps small business user. Just remember to get a monitor separately and you’re good to use this affordable HP.
