If you’ve been checking out the new HP 17-x010nr, I don’t blame you. It comes from a trusted manufacturer and the computer has already received some favorable reviews. That could be a deciding factor for buying, but you might also want to check out my professional opinion on this notebook below!

Talking about performance

Processor dictates much what you can do with your laptop. In HP 17-x010nr, the processor happens to be the quad-core Intel Pentium N3710. The most important specifications are 1.1GHz base speed and up to 2.6GHz turbo burst. Sadly, this isn’t the fastest of units, CPU Mark score being only around 1700 (Celerons get ~1000 and Core i3s ~3000). With the 4GB RAM (upgradeable to at least 8GB) you’re good to run typical home and office software but not very demanding applications, like video editing software.

The storage drive is just what one could expect for this price: a hard drive with terabyte storage capacity and 5400RPM spindle speed. I must say that a solid-state drive would make the system run much faster, and the good thing is that you can actually install one here. Just remember you will also need to remove the HDD first because there’s no space for two drives.

How does it work for gaming?

HP 17-x010nr is a poor choice for gaming. The graphics are commanded by a mere integrated graphics chip called Intel HD 405. Very new games will be in trouble, such as GTA 5 or Fallout 4, those wouldn’t run at all. On the other hand, throw a game like Counter-Strike: Go or League of Legends and you’ll survive, at least on low settings. Also remember it is not possible to install a dedicated graphics card here.

What ports it offers?

If you’re looking for a way to connect external monitor or even HDTV to HP 17-x010nr, you can do that through the laptop’s HDMI-output. You just need a cable for that. The unit also has USB ports at your disposal (one USB 3.0 and two USB 2.0).

Typical for a big laptop, there’s a DVD burner available (doesn’t work with BluRay though). Memory cards are supported too using the microSD card reader.

There are two ways to connect this thing to Internet: the RJ-45 LAN port (just 100Mbps transfer rates) and the WiFi card (802.11n standard with Bluetooth 4.0 enabled).

Other important features and benefits

I don’t think the display is very special, but it will do its job. 17.3″ diagonal is offered with a 1600×900 maximum resolution – sadly no Full HD here. Also remember it does not support touch. With the embedded 720p webcam you can film a couple of videos for YouTube or just have a video chat with your connections.

The battery (3 cells, 31Whr) is listed as lasting up to 5 hours and 45 minutes – however users who bought this notebook say it’s good for 3-4 hours only.

You won’t get a backlit keyboard here.

HP 17-x010nr is a reasonable choice for people who a) don’t have too much money to spend on a laptop and b) require a big display. This affordable (yet big) laptop is ideal for home or perhaps small office, where the programs in use are not that demanding, and where having a big screen is desirable. There’s nothing that sticks out (in good or bad way), a decent laptop computer it is!
