A laptop that doesn’t cost a lot is usually in spotlight because people need a computer but don’t want to pay too much for one. Indeed, something like HP 15-ba030nr might sound like your cup of tea with its AMD A8 processor, but being hasty with computer shopping is never a good thing if you ask me…
Speaking in absolute terms, I can’t praise the performance of HP 15-ba030nr a lot. But given the price, the performance starts to look very decent. The AMD A8-7410 APU can take a lot of beating before slowdowns will occur, its critical specifications being four cores, 2.2GHz clock speed and 2.5GHz turbo boost. It will do a similar job to Intel Core i3s of the 4th generation.
Likewise, there’s a good amount of memory – 6GB – available, and upgrading at least to 8GB is possible (however the difference will be minimal).
HP 15-ba030nr offers a “cookie cutter” 15.6″ inch display with support for 1366×768 resolution. It’s not a touch sensitive screen, keep that in mind. You will also find a webcam there, in the usual top bezel position, and that you can use for filming videos or chatting with friends if you’d like.
There’s a 1TB 5400RPM hard drive installed, it gives great raw storage space but lacks in the performance department. To combat this, a person with right skills can disassemble the computer and put in a solid-state drive. Anyway, the current drive will hold for example around 200000 images so you’re not running out of space anytime soon!
Contrary to what some people said, this notebook definitely has a DVD burner! It also comes with SD card slot for quick data transfers.
The ports you can use are one USB 3.0 and two USB 2.0 for external drives and mouses etc. Then there is HDMI-output which accepts a PC monitor or television. A basic 100Mbps RJ-45 port is offered with also built-in 802.11n WiFi and Bluetooth 4.0 card for wireless connection.
It is said the battery (3-cell 31Whr) on this laptop isn’t the best, offering at most four hours of use after which you need to recharge. Anyway, you can not expect to receive the best for this little money.
The keyboard does not have backlight.
I have to be the bearer of bad news for gamers: HP 15-ba030nr has poor graphics performance. The integrated engine is called AMD Radeon R5, and it can only be compared to other older integrated units like Intel HD 4400. So, you are going to get some poor frame rates (~25FPS low settings) on more demanding games like Battlefield 4 and GTA 5. But throw in Runescape or Minecraft and you will be happy.
Somebody commented that HP 15-ba030nr is a no-frills notebook. Indeed, that’s what it surely is: a laptop for lightweight use, such as home or office stuff. The HP doesn’t stand out from the crowd of other budget laptops, so choosing it won’t be a better or worse than its competitors. If you just want a notebook for everyday use, do check this HP out.
