An inexpensive laptop is enough if web surfing and YouTube is pretty much all you do with your computer. In that case, take a look at this simple HP 15-ay020nr. It offers a good baseline performance, alright 15-inches display and low price tag. But is there something more you should know before buying it…?

The good

For most computer users the components in HP 15-ay020nr are fast enough. The processor, Intel Core i3-5005U, operates on two cores and 2.0GHz clock speed and receives ~2900 score in CPU Mark – much more than Celerons and Pentiums (1000-2000 points) you might’ve been checking. There’s also nothing wrong with the included 4GB DDR3L memory, and you should be able to replace it with 8GB stick if you really wanted to.

A decent 15.6″ display is included, to be honest it doesn’t come with any fancy stuff, just the usual 1366×768 resolution. But it’s good enough for general use, just remember that touch is not supported. If you take a look at the top screen bezel you can see a webcam there, fire up Skype and say hi to your friends if you want!

The neutral

You can not demand much for this price, but I still have to say that solid-state drives are the choice of this era. Yet, there’s still no such SSD in HP 15-ay020nr, just one-terabyte spinning disk hard drive with 5400RPM spindle speed. Again, home users shouldn’t worry too much about it, and if you know something about these laptops you can take it out and put in an SSD!

At 3 cells and 31Wh the battery isn’t too heavyweight a unit, but you can still expect a good ~4 hours web surfing before you need to charge it again.

Ports are an essential thing for a laptop, and this HP comes with one USB 3.0 and two USB 2.0 to hook up your favorite peripherals. The video output is provided by full-sized HDMI and wired networking by 100Mbps RJ-45 port. Don’t forget also wireless adapter with bgn support and Bluetooth 4.0 is included.

Both DVD burner and SD card reader are available so you can conveniently transfer data locally to/from the laptop if you want.

There’s no backlit keyboard, but such a feature rarely exists in these cheaper models.

The bad

It’s only very, very lightweight gaming this HP 15-ay020nr is good for! Think about games such as Runescape, World of Warcraft and Minecraft – those work fine on this notebook especially if you don’t mind lowering the settings a bit. However, titles full of graphics such as GTA 5, Battlefield 4 and Fallout 4 are too much for the integrated Intel HD 5500 graphics chip – yep, no dedicated card here!

As you can probably guess, HP 15-ay020nr is not the fastest laptop you can get. But if you ask me, it doesn’t even have to be. It runs a web browser and different video streaming services like nobody’s business, and you can also use it for very lightweight gaming. Just don’t expect it to be a powerhouse and you should be good to go!
