It’s not a secret any desktop looks good on paper, in the text the advertisement department wrote. For example, Dell XPS x8900-2506BLK is said to have Intel Core i7 processor, 16GB RAM and even a dedicated graphics card. That is sweet for sure, but it’s not the whole truth. Below, I’ll tell you what is actually good and bad about this desktop.
Blazing processor – Well, it is true the processing power is superior in this Dell. You will find Intel Core i7-6700, a quad-core unit with great 3.4GHz clock speed and even greater 4.0GHz turbo. These kind of numbers mean it gets over 9900 points in CPU Mark; that’s a ridiculously high score considering most “regular” processors in desktops fall in the range of 4000-6000. In reality, the i7-6700 will be good for running even the very complex programs such as Adobe video editors.
DDR4 memory – It’s the new DDR4 type RAM in Dell XPS x8900-2506BLK, two 8GB sticks totaling at 16GB. That is more than in 99% of desktops, but if for some reason sixteen gigabytes is not enough, don’t worry. You can go all the way to 32GB as there are four DIMM slots on the mainboard.
A lot of ports – If it’s peripherals you want to plug in, you’re lucky. To begin with, the desktop features ten USB ports in total – four USB 3.0 and two USB 2.0 are in the back while two USB 3.0 and two USB 2.0 are in the top/front. Video connections include HDMI and DisplayPort plus ports in the graphics card, hence dual display setup can be used.
Pretty good for gaming – GeForce GTX 745 (4GB DDR3) is a dedicated PCI-e x16 graphics card of decent performance. For example, you can fire up GTA 5 and use Full HD resolution with low/medium details and enjoy around 45 frames per second. The Witcher 3 with low and 1080p will end up between 20 and 25 FPS.
Wired and wireless adapters – There are 1000Mbps RJ-45 port and 802.11n WiFi + Bluetooth 4.0 card at your disposal.
DVD burner available – A nice thing to have if you really need it. A 19-in-1 media reader for every memory card standard is also there.
No monitor included – Because monitor is left out, the price is lower. Of course you may need to buy one which makes the total package cost more. Keyboard and mouse are anyway included with Dell XPS x8900-2506BLK.
Platter-based hard drive – For a desktop, such a old-school SATA 3 hard drive goes. It’s 1TB in size so you will never run out of space. However, many people prefer performance over raw storage size, in that case you can install SSD. There are two 3.5″ bays free and also one M.2 slot on the motherboard.
Dell XPS x8900-2506BLK is quite a well-rounded power user desktop. It’s going to feel very fast in use thanks to the i7 processor and 16GB RAM. You can make it even faster with a solid-state drive. Gaming will work alright, although you can not expect top FPS and maximum settings with newer games. As somebody put it, the Dell performs extremely well: if that’s what you’re after I can recommend this speedy computer for you.
