A powerful desktop seems to be the right selection of words to describe the Dell XPS 8700 (X8700-2815BLK). Because inside, you will find high-end Core i7 processor coupled with 16GB system memory and a hard drive offering terabyte storage. Impressive for sure, but perhaps there are reasons not to get this desktop..?

It’s a Core i7-4790 powered computer so a lot can be expected. That quad-core processor has 3.6GHz clock speed and 4.0GHz turbo to begin with, and all this leads to a CPU Mark score of 10,000. Yes, that is ten thousand, and it’s higher than 99% of processors have. So as far as the CPU is concerned, there will be no program that will show lag or slow down the system.

Also the memory helps all the applications run nice and smooth. You’ll get 16GB RAM, I think it’s distributed to two 8GB DIMM modules. There are four slots for memory in total, so maximum RAM you can use is 32GB. Hard drive is very large 1TB (7200RPM) one, and there are two free 3.5″ bays if you want to put in more. Also one mSATA slot is available.

The Dell is alright desktop for gaming. There’s a dedicated graphics card known as GeForce GTX 745 (with 4GB memory). For example, the famous GTA 5 will end up with ~50FPS using Full HD and high settings. And if you’re not happy with that, you can always replace the GTX 745. It’s installed on a PCI-e x16 slot, it accepts any single-width full length graphics card.

Ports and connections

In total, the Dell desktop features ten USB ports. Six are in the rear, two USB 2.0 and four USB 3.0. The rest four (two USB 2.0 and USB 3.0) are in the front panel. There are also HDMI, DisplayPort, VGA and DVI video outputs available – you can indeed connect two monitors at the same time.

Now, there is a Gigabit RJ-45 jack in the back panel, but the desktop features an internal N-type WiFi & Bluetooth card as well.

DVD burner and 19-in-1 media card reader are found in the front.

What other things to keep in mind?

As with most desktops, monitor is not included with this unit. Wired keyboard and mouse are.

Windows 10 Home (64-bit) is pre-installed on the system.

From what I can see, Dell XPS 8700 (X8700-2815BLK) doesn’t have any big disadvantages. It’s a powerful, well-rounded machine for power users and even gamers thanks to its dedicated GeForce graphics card. A lot of peripherals can be plugged in and also WiFi can be used for network connection. Just pair this desktop with a quality monitor and you got yourself a good desktop for years to come.
