Let me introduce you to one of the more powerful notebooks of 2016, the Dell Inspiron i7559-12623RED. It’s a Core i5 powered 15.6″ laptop meant for professionals who can (and will) appreciate heavyweight components. But it might very well be there are some reasons why one should get another computer… Let me elaborate on that below!

The strong points

The obvious advantage of Dell Inspiron i7559-12623RED is its high performance. You will find Intel Core i5-6300HQ processor inside, a unit with four cores and 2.3GHz clock speed that extends to 3.2GH with the help of turbo. It gets closer to 5700 points in CPU Mark tests, that’s high score for a laptop processor. In general, all applications will work flawlessly on this machine. That’s also evident when you take a look at memory setup: one 8GB stick which leaves another slot empty, allowing you to upgrade to 16GB. Thus, multitasking will be a smooth sail as well!

This computer also works for gaming very well. A dedicated GeForce GTX 960M (4GB GDDR5) is installed inside, it’s one of the better laptop gaming cards. In general, you can play any game on high settings (and Full HD resolution), examples being GTA 5 at ~50FPS and The Witcher 3 at ~30FPS.

The notebook has a good-enough 15.6 inches matte display, resolution is of course 1920×1080 so power users rejoice. It is not a touch sensitive display, keep that in mind.

Backlit keyboard is included.

Dell Inspiron i7559-12623RED does not have optical drive. The solution, if you want to use discs, is to get an external drive that plugs to the notebook’s USB slot. In addition, you might also find the Dell’s SD/MMC card slot suitable for your needs.

Set of ports is average: three USB 3.0 ports however no USB Type-C and one HDMI-out for hooking up an extra monitor. 1000Mbps RJ-45 is available if you want Internet access with cable; of course a dual-band 802.11ac WiFi adapter is there as well! Bluetooth 4.0 included.

Battery life is average, you are going to get 4-5 hours on a single charge (including mostly web browsing). The 6-cell 74Whr unit is an integrated one, so replacing it will most likely involve disassembling the whole laptop.

The weak points

I can’t praise the storage drive in Dell Inspiron i7559-12623RED too much. It’s a hybrid hard drive, a compromise between true HDD and SSD. It contains the 1TB 5400RPM SATA 3 hard drive part and 8GB SSD-like flash cache. The drive is somewhat faster than a pure HDD, however it will show as one on My Computer, meaning you can not decide what files will be put on the faster SSD part. However, if you want a solid-state drive you can easily install one: there’s a free M.2 slot inside!

Who would get the most out of Dell Inspiron i7559-12623RED? Obviously, power users with intentions to play games, too. Let me explain: this kind of a system produces excellent performance for software such as virtual environments and photo editors. The quad-core Core i5 and 8GB RAM make sure of that. On the other hand, what you’ll also get is a great gaming performance since there is a full-blown dedicated graphics card installed. To be honest, with the current price, this Dell offers excellent value – check it out if solid, heavy-duty laptop is what you’re after!
