Are you in search of a new office-level laptop computer? Then you probably need something snappy and reliable yet not too expensive. One example could be this Dell Inspiron i7548-7286SLV, an i7 powered notebook with touchscreen and plenty of storage space. Let me introduce you to this laptop and tell whether it’s actually a good buy or not…

General performance

Dell Inspiron i7548-7286SLV is good for heavier work, more than just surfing the web with a browser. It’s equipped with Intel’s top-of-the-line series i7, more precisely the Core i7-5500U of two cores, 2.4GHz clock speed and 3.0GHz turbo. It’s a low-voltage unit (15W TDP, doesn’t use that much power) however CPU Mark (a benchmark) score is still a strong 4000. Also consider there is 12GB memory installed, which is more than enough for multitasking and such demanding programs. The most RAM this system accepts is 16GB (two 8GB sticks).

Hard drive solution isn’t that exciting, there is only 1TB 5400RPM drive included. As you probably know, such a drive is excellent for storing a huge amount of data (one terabyte is similar to around two hundred DVDs). At the same time, it’s quite a slow drive, not giving a boost for the performance. You can swap it for an SSD of course, the slot is 7mm 2.5″ SATA 3.

Can be used for gaming?

Dell Inspiron i7548-7286SLV is decent for low-level gaming. It doesn’t have any dedicated graphics, you’re stuck with the processor integrated Intel HD 5500 unit. It’s not a fast chip, meaning you need to adjust gaming settings to low-medium to get acceptable frame rates. For example, if you wanted to play GTA 5, low settings would be required to get ~25 frames per second. On the other hand, games like World of Warcraft shall run at better FPS and higher settings.

What devices can I plug in?

Dell Inspiron i7548-7286SLV can take three USB devices (printer, for example) simultaneously, there are one USB 2.0 and two USB 3.0 ports available. The video output is HDMI, meaning that HD televisions and PC monitors can be plugged in and you can use the notebook through that secondary screen.

For Internet, there is no built-in RJ-45 port, but WiFi + Bluetooth 4.0 adapter is installed.

No optical drive seems to be included; you can use an external one if you need to.

Miscellaneous things and benefits

I don’t think the display of this Dell is anything special, just a regular 15.6″ touchscreen with 1366×768 resolution (no Full HD). There’s a front-facing webcam installed on top of it, supporting 720p resolution for video.

The battery has specs of 3 cells and 43Whr. I’d expect the usual four hours out of it (under lightweight use), so nothing fancy.

The keyboard is backlit on this model.

Dell Inspiron i7548-7286SLV is fast, even the though with a solid-state drive it would be even faster. You will find the current hard drive a bit old-school, yet big for files. Processor is very decent i7, and the touch screen will make sense for many people. This notebook supports all the software one might use, games not so much because there is no dedicated graphics card. If this is OK for you, why not to take a closer look at this new notebook!
