Dell Inspiron i5559-1747SLV looks like a low-end laptop for home, perhaps office, use. There’s a Core i3 processor in the heart of the system, and 6GB RAM and 1TB hard drive as other important components. But what does this all mean for you, and is the notebook really worth its price? You can find our professional opinion on that below!

Suitable for program X?

At a glance, the processor of Dell Inspiron i5559-1747SLV is not that impressive. It is the dual-core Intel Core i3-6100U, surely a new model (6th generation) but how about the i3 family that is known as mainstream, even low-end chips? Well, this particular unit features 2.3GHz clock speed and reaches ~3500 points in CPU Mark. That’s very good for an i3, for example the popular i5-5200U gets the same score. So if you’re concerned about the processor, let me tell you that most programs (including photo editors) run fine on it!

The RAM shouldn’t become a bottleneck either. The notebook has 6GB DDR3L memory installed, on 4GB and 2GB sticks. Most people should be good with that, 6GB is capable of some multitasking as well. For your information, you can upgrade the RAM to a maximum 16GB with two 8GB sticks.

The hard drive is tad boring, the laptop features 1TB 5400RPM drive for storage. It’s connected to a SATA 3 slot. Such a drive is good if you require a lot of space for your files, although if you want the snappiest performance, then SSD is better. You can install one here, but don’t forget you’ll need to remove the hard drive first in order to do that.

Good for gamers too?

Dell Inspiron i5559-1747SLV would not satisfy the needs of a hardcore gamer. Such a person wants a dedicated graphics card, however what this system offers is just an integrated chip bearing the name Intel HD 520. You can hardly use it for things like Fallout 4, frames per second would be below 20 even on low settings. With GTA 5 you would do better, getting 25-30FPS using low settings and 720p resolution. Games like Counter-Strike: Go are playable even when more eye candy is on.

What ports does it have?

You’ll find the common set-up of ports in Dell Inspiron i5559-1747SLV. The laptop offers only one video output for connecting an external monitor, and that’s the HDMI-out. In addition, for hooking up peripherals the notebook has two USB 2.0 and one USB 3.0.

For wireless networking there’s 802.11ac WiFi card with Bluetooth 4.0 enabled. Connecting with cable is possible too, although the Ethernet (RJ-45) card supports only up to 100Mbps speed.

For uploading some data locally, you may use the tray-load DVD burner or SD media card reader.

Want to have a chat with your friends or shoot a short video to YouTube? Entirely possible, there’s 1280×720 webcam for that.

Miscellaneous yet important things

The screen, yes. In Dell Inspiron i5559-1747SLV the display has the usual 15.6″ size and resolution is the usual 1366×768. Some people will find the touch screen a desirable feature. Maximum operating angle is 135 degrees so no tablet functionality here.

Wondering how long will this laptop last with a single charge? Well, there’s a removable 4-cell 40Whr battery, it will be good for ca. 4 hours before recharge is needed.

The keyboard doesn’t have backlight. Operating system of this unit is Windows 10 Home (64-bit) and it is pre-loaded on the hard drive.

Dell Inspiron i5559-1747SLV should be a decent choice if you don’t have very high expectations. The processor is a mainstream (but the latest generation) Core i3 so any “everyday” program will run smooth and nice. Touchscreen is an useful thing for many. For some people, the slow 5400RPM hard drive could be a culprit. You can change that to SSD but it of course costs money. Gaming is very limited because of integrated graphics engine. In short, the system isn’t good for players, but if you’re looking for a cheap notebook to do your daily computing tasks with, then give this Dell a chance!
