The good thing about 2-in-1 laptops is the added value: you can use the notebook in tablet mode as well so you don’t need to buy two devices. This saves you money and probably some space too. One of those computers is Dell Inspiron i5378-2885GRY, a high-end laptop, and below I will discuss if it’s something to buy or pass…

The good

These pricier models often come with a nice display and I don’t see why Dell Inspiron i5378-2885GRY would be different. The 13.3″ IPS touch screen operates on Full HD resolution which surely adds to the quality. And it really rotates a full 360 degrees after which the laptop is in tablet mode.

Another advantage is the latest 7th generation processor, Intel Core i5-7200U. The turbo speed takes this dual-core unit up to 3.1GHz while the base speed is 2.5GHz. It’s quite a bit faster than the predecessor i5-6200U, with the new one getting ~4800 CPU Mark points vs the older ~4000 points. It’s snappy processor performance one can expect for sure.

The neutral

I could almost list this as a bad thing. Dell Inspiron i5378-2885GRY doesn’t have a solid-state drive, just one terabyte 5400RPM SATA3 2.5″ hard drive. But all hope is not lost, you have two options: there is empty M.2 slot so upgrade to SSD yourself, or then buy another version of this computer that has solid-state drive already there – yep, they exist.

Having 8GB memory (one single channel DDR4 2400MHz chip) is decent, and if you’re not happy with it, just put in a new memory chip – there’s a free slot inside.

There are exactly three USB ports in this machine, one older USB 2.0 and two faster USB 3.0. Video output is brought by a full-sized HDMI. To Internet you can connect with the speedy dual-band 802.11ac WiFi + Bluetooth 4.2 card.

Not a surprise for many, but this Dell doesn’t come with an optical drive because of size limits. But maybe the included SD card slot is enough for you?

The item has a webcam in the top bezel, it captures 720p video at 30 frames per second.

The keyboard features backlight.

The battery life (3-cell 42Whr integrated unit) isn’t wonderful, around 6 hours with continuous web surfing. But I bet for most people it’s fine, at least for me it would be.

The bad

Ultrabooks, and many laptops to that matter, don’t possess great graphics performance. That’s because of integrated chips that do rather poor with newer games. The Intel HD 620 chip in Dell Inspiron i5378-2885GRY can be used for low-level gaming, like playing GTA 5 using low settings and 720p resolution which will result in 25-30FPS. That’s far from what hardcore gamers want. But yeah, for casually playing Minecraft or Sims 4 this computer works.

Verdict

Dell Inspiron i5378-2885GRY is a 2-in-1 laptop in an ultrabook. The compact 13.3″ screen offers Full HD resolution and turns all the way flat, so doubling as a tablet. The performance aspect is in check too: a 7th generation i5 processor with 8GB RAM are a nice combo – however a solid-state drive would make it even quicker. At around 3.4 pounds nobody should have issues carrying the unit around. If functionality, portability and performance interest you, this Dell is surely worth the money.
