Interested in an affordable yet capable desktop computer? Here is Dell Inspiron i3847-8924BK, equipped with state-of-the-art Core i7 processor, 16GB system memory and an enormous hard drive. Those specs are sweet, yes, but something might be missing…

So is the computer good for most software?

Dell Inspiron i3847-8924BK sure is a fast desktop. This is evident when you take a look in the engine room: there are things like Core i7-4790 processor speeding the system up. Such a powerhouse offers you four cores, a clock speed of 3.6GHz and turbo of 4.0GHz. Also check out how many CPU Mark points the processor gets: around 10000. That’s a ridiculously high score; you won’t have problems no matter what software it is you’re planning to run!

Other aspects in the engine room are equally good: a 16GB memory (already maxed out) and 1000GB hard drive with 7200RPM spindle speed. If you want a solid-state drive, feel free to put one in – you might need adapter though, because the free bay inside has 3.5″ dimensions.

Also good for gaming?

It would be a lie to call Dell Inspiron i3847-8924BK a true gaming desktop, the gaming performance is rather low thanks to Intel HD Graphics – which is a tiny, low-end integrated engine. It surely allows you to play many games – even heavyweight types like GTA 5 are not unheard of – but you’ll need to be careful with the settings (20-30FPS can be expected on those heavier games with low settings). That said, you can play less-demanding types such as CS: Go even with high details here.

It looks like the motherboard contains an unoccupied PCI-e x16 slot; to that you can put a dedicated video card (a small one) and enjoy somewhat better frame rates!

What devices can I plug in?

The essential ports in Dell Inspiron i3847-8924BK are: two USB 3.0, six USB 2.0 and one HDMI-out and VGA. To those, you can connect a wide array of devices, ranging from printers to many kinds of external monitors. For audio, the desktop offers the usual microphone, line-out and line-in connectors.

Like most computers of today, this Dell features a Gigabit RJ-45 port for cable Internet access, and also a wireless N-standard adapter if you want WiFi. Bluetooth 4.0 also works, you can for example transfer some small files from your phone with that.

As for moving a bigger amount of data, you can use the DVD burner in front panel. Also the 8-in-1 media card reader is one possibility, it works with SD, MS, MMC and xD types.

Does it offer any other benefits?

Just so you know, Dell Inspiron i3847-8924BK doesn’t come with a monitor – for that you need to budget some extra money. Keyboard and mouse are however included.

It looks like Windows 8.1 (64-bit) is the operating system here. A bit of a bummer, but you can upgrade it free to Windows 10 till the end of July 2016.

Summing it up

Like somebody put it, Dell Inspiron i3847-8924BK is a workhorse that is also blazing fast. See, the combination of Intel Core i7 CPU and 16 gigabytes RAM do wonders for any kind of software: you should not experience slowdowns loading and using fancier programs like Photoshop, and the general feel of the computer will be smooth. The system also accepts a huge amount of files thanks to the one terabyte hard drive. There is not much gaming performance to speak of, but you can add a graphics card to help with that. If this sounds about what you’ve been looking for, then you would probably be happy with this snappy Dell!
