Another member in the Dell’s budget desktop armada is the Inspiron i3847-2310BK. It has Pentium processor, 4GB memory and Windows 8.1 as its operating system. It surely sounds like the other Inspirons, but the most important question is: what’s in it for you? To answer that question, we here at TechForPennies.com took a closer look at this desktop and determined its advantages and disadvantages for you!

The essentials

As noted above, Dell Inspiron i3847-2310BK has Intel Pentium processor inside. They used to be the Intel’s flagship CPUs back in the days, having then been replaced by fastel Intel Core processors. Nonetheless, this dual-core G3240 model with 3.1GHz speed doesn’t do too bad in the benchmarks, and offers excellent value for the budget-minded. Both lightweight tasks and occasional gaming should be possible, with respect to limitations the integrated Intel HD Graphics chip has.

System memory of this Inspiron stands at comfortable 4GB. It’s good amount to start with, and installing more is possible because there’s one memory slot free. Maximum memory supported is 16GB, something you don’t normally need, but for some power users 6-8GB RAM is an adequate amount to work with.

Having a terabyte hard drive is helpful if you’re into downloading or processing huge files. The drive runs on 7200RPM which is slightly faster than 5400RPM drives. There should also be a slot for additional 3.5″ drive, and installing SSD to such a slot is possible with an adapter.

Operating system for Dell Inspiron i3847-2310BK is Windows 8.1 64-bit version.

The connections

For many kinds of peripherals you’ll have in total 8 USB ports. Two of them are USB 3.0. Neither of those faster USBs are however located in front panel which has only two USB 2.0s. In addition to them, the front also has mic/headphone jack and a 8-in-1 media card reader.

The back panel contains HDMI and VGA ports, so using a simple dual monitor setup would be possible. There are also ports for audio (mic, line-in, line-out) and RJ-45 port for Gigabit Ethernet networking.

In addition to the wired Ethernet, Dell Inspiron i3847-2310BK has a Wireless adapter. Bluetooth 4.0 is also supported.

What else to keep in mind?

The dimensions for this box are 14.5″ H x 7″ W x 17″ D. Thus, it is larger than Dell Inspiron i3647 but it also means there are more space for expansions. In addition to one free 3.5″ slot, there’s also free bay for 5.25″ drive. One is already taken by existing DVD burner. A free PCI-e x16 slot is also available, and considering the size of this desktop, it could realistically hold an external graphics card if you wanted to give a big boost to the gaming performance.

To keep the costs down, there’s no monitor included with this desktop. However, USB keyboard and mouse are included.

Conclusion

Dell Inspiron i3847-2310BK is a proud member of the Inspiron family, and rightly so. It offers good overall performance for budget price. The system unit is indeed bigger than the smaller counterparts’, but for somebody with the need and skills also sports better expandability than the smaller Inspiron i3647. However, the i3647 model offers better performance out of the box thanks to its faster Intel Core processor and better graphics chip. So, if you’re not after expandability, going for the other model might be a better choice. However, neither of these Dells are bad – especially after reading positive reviews about them – and you’ll get a good solid desktop no matter which one you opt for.
