It’s not a tablet, smartphone or laptop that people always want. Sometimes a good old desktop like Dell Inspiron i3650-0635SLV is the best choice for you. It seems to have decent enough components for everyday computing, but sometimes the devil is in the details. For this exact reason an examination of the computer must take place here…

General performance

First thing to remember is the 6th generation Intel Core i5-6400 processor, a Spring 2015 quad-core release offering 2.7GHz clock speed that increases to 3.3GHz with turbo. It’s quite a mid-range desktop processor, and the i5-6400 is not afraid if you run more complex applications. CPU Mark score is ~6600 should that matter to you.

Dell Inspiron i3650-0635SLV has an usual storage option, the 1TB 7200RPM 3.5″ hard drive connected to SATA 3 interface. The advantage is that you get all the storage in the world, the disadvantage is slower performance compared to solid-state drives. I’m not sure if there are any extra bays inside but you can always change the current drive if you want.

Memory is served by one 8GB DDR3L 1600MHz stick. On the mainboard one slot is free which means the maximum memory is 16GB on this desktop (like on most budget computers for that matter).

How does the computer work for gaming?

You should not get Dell Inspiron i3650-0635SLV for hardcore gaming. Such an affordable desktop doesn’t include dedicated graphics which naturally means bad gaming performance. The Intel HD 530 integrated graphics allows you to play less demanding games on medium settings and some newer ones such as GTA 5 and Fallout 4 on low settings (~30FPS). But if you want better gaming capacities the situation can be changed: the mainboard has a free PCIe x16 slot inside for graphics card!

What ports and connections does it have?

Dell Inspiron i3650-0635SLV comes with six USB ports, on one hand it’s plenty but on the other hand not – many other desktops have ten. If you ask my opinion the six will suffice. Four are USB 2.0 and two are USB 3.0.

There are at least VGA and HDMI outputs for plugging in the monitor here. Use HDMI for better image quality, the VGA port is for very old displays.

The desktop has a built-in bgn WiFi card with Bluetooth 4.0 support. Of course, also Gigabit RJ-45 port is offered for those who prefer cable.

A tray-load DVD burner is included, so is a memory card reader for SD and MMC formats.

Miscellaneous yet important things

Like always, the computer comes with a wired keyboard and mouse, but monitor you must buy yourself.

Windows 10 Home (64-bit) is the operating system.

Verdict

Comparing to other home desktops, hardly any bad word can be said about Dell Inspiron i3650-0635SLV. It’s a well-priced computer with plenty of processor power and a huge storage drive. Surely it’s not on par with first class desktops but you never get one for this price. Indeed, considering how little you will be paying for the Dell, I can advice home and office users to take a closer look at it!
