If you’re not a power user in search for a fancy laptop, you’re lucky. A simpler type of notebook is great for you, and the best thing is, those computers are cheap. For example, Dell Inspiron i3541-1001BLK is one of those affordable notebooks but the real question is: is it powerful enough or not..?

General performance

It’s an entry level processor you’ll get with this Dell, a certain AMD A6-6310. With its ~2400 CPU Mark score it can be compared to older Core i3s from the Intel’s 4th generation. Four cores are a plus, clock speed is 1.8GHz and turbo 2.4GHz. In short, it’s a basic processor good for lighter home or office use.

Dell Inspiron i3541-1001BLK has one slot for memory, its taken by a 4GB RAM stick. If you know how to, you can replace it with a maximum 8GB DDR3L type stick for a memory boost.

There’s not a great storage drive in this Dell, it’s only a 500GB hard drive (5400RPM) plugged to SATA 3 port. There are no free bays or M.2 slots for extra drives, so if you want to put in a solid-state drive you’ll need to remove the current HDD first.

Can this laptop be used for gaming?

Dell Inspiron i3541-1001BLK is surely not a player’s notebook, but some gaming is possible. The AMD processor offers an integrated graphics unit called Radeon R4 which is comparable to Intel HD 4000. Obviously, you are not going to play games such as The Witcher 3, Assassin’s Creed Unity or GTA 5, but browser-based ones or even Counter-Strike: Go would still work.

Connections and ports

It’s possible to connect all the printers, keyboards etc. to this Dell, the connections are sufficient but not great. Two USB 2.0 and one USB 3.0 are offered, also HDMI-out is there for an external monitor. The 10/100 RJ-45 port can be used for wired network connection, and the 802.11n-type WiFi + Bluetooth 4.0 combo card works for Internet, too.

The notebook has a standard DVD burner as well as a memory card reader for SD cards.

The webcam supports 720p video at 30FPS, you’ll find it decent enough for video chats or even shooting a video or two for YouTube.

Miscellaneous things

It looks like the display in Dell Inspiron i3541-1001BLK is pretty basic, a 15.6″ one with 1366×768 maximum resolution. It’s not a touch screen.

Weight for the whole unit is 5.29 pounds, the 4-cell 40Whr battery should last for the usual 4-5 hours.

Backlit keyboard is not featured here.

Summing it up

It’s certainly not a powerhouse, but the Dell works wonders for home, office or even student use. There’s no basic program that wouldn’t work here, it’s also possible to play low-level games using conservative settings. Essential ports are offered for enhancing this unit with different peripherals. If you’re not a demanding user, you should find this Dell only a good computer.
