If your current laptop is getting too old, replacing it is a good idea – using a slow notebook is one of the most frustrating things there exists. Well, Dell Inspiron i3000-5099SLV is one of the newer laptops that promises budget performance with its Celeron processor. This might be enough for some, but let me also address the potential issues of this notebook below…

The good

Dell Inspiron i3000-5099SLV is truly an inexpensive laptop, so it’s not going to hurt your wallet a lot. The performance suffices for casual users (web browser, Skype and that kind of stuff). The processor is Intel Celeron N3050 (dual core, 1.6GHz base frequency and 2.2GHz turbo speed) with ~900 CPU Mark points – very, very low score, but good for the aforementioned use. The default memory is decent 4GB, however if you want more you can put a maximum 8GB, the motherboard has one slot all in all.

This Dell is a 2-in-1 model – both laptop and tablet are there. That’s because the display supports touch and rotates 360 degrees. If you get this machine, you don’t need to get a separate tablet – everything is included! The display itself has a small 11.6″ diagonal and 1366×768 resolution. IPS panel ensures wide viewing angles, closer to 180 degrees. A webcam is located inside the top screen bezel.

The 3-cell 43Whr will give power for web browsing for ~6 hours on a single charge. The battery unit is integrated, so tools are required to replace it.

The neutral

A laptop would benefit from solid-state drive, however what Dell Inspiron i3000-5099SLV has is a platter-based 500GB 5400RPM hard drive. It’s slower and more prone to damage than SSD, yet again, this kind of basic drive is all a casual user needs. If you are techie enough, you could always remove it and put solid-state drive in place, though.

Ports include the basics (= should be sufficient for a home user). Those are one USB 2.0, two USB 3.0 and one HDMI-out. The last can be used for plugging in another display, such as HD television. RJ-45 port is not available by default, but USB-to-RJ45 adapter can be used. And don’t forget there is 802.11bgn WiFi + Bluetooth 4.0 adapter to reach wireless networks!

There is no space inside for an optical drive, so you may want to get an external one if access to discs is required. Media card reader (SD & MMC) is however included.

The bad

Dell Inspiron i3000-5099SLV has no real graphics card so gaming is not ideal – graphics engine is Intel HD, quite a slow integrated chip. Minecraft will work fine, so will League of Legends. However, most new games with fancy graphics won’t work, those include GTA 5, Battlefield 4 and Crysis 3.

Keyboard is not backlit, although not everybody cares in the first place.

Dell Inspiron i3000-5099SLV is not a heavy-duty laptop, but will get you through a day of home or office use easily. Also remember it is a 2-in-1 model, so you won’t probably need laptop and tablet separately; they’re included in one device here. The unit is also easy to carry around, not a burden to take with you on your travels. The main culprit is performance; this rig is certainly not suitable for gaming. If you are OK with that, then you should find this affordable Dell sufficient for your needs!
