Dell Inspiron 3847 i3847-3851BK is a good old desktop computer, featuring Core i3 processor, 8GB RAM and a terabyte hard drive. It looks pretty basic for sure, but that might be all a casual user needs. So let’s see what this rig could offer to you, and whether you should spend your money on it or not.

The system runs on a Haswell-based, 4th generation Intel Core i3-4160 processor. It features a dual-core design and a high 3.6GHz clock speed (although no turbo). The processor receives around 5000 points in Passmark tests, making it a very capable desktop i3 model. Compared to common Celerons and Pentiums (1500 to 3000 points) the i3-4160 is a lot faster, and suitability for power users and heavy applications is indeed guaranteed.

Dell Inspiron 3847 i3847-3851BK has 8GB RAM, distribution being two 4GB DDR3-1600MHz modules. They take up the both memory slots on the mainboard – there are no four slots like in many other desktops. The maximum RAM is 16GB which you can achieve by installing two 8GB memory modules on the system.

The storage is an excellent 1000GB 7200RPM hard drive. It gives you plenty of space, and as an added plus, operates bit faster than a regular 5400RPM model. That being said, solid-state drive is still the way to go for the performance-minded. The manual says there’s one extra 3.5″ slot free which you can use to install SSD with an adapter.

Can you play games on it?

Gaming isn’t the most obvious thing one could do on this computer, although some playing is possible for sure. The system integrates a graphics chip called Intel HD 4400. It can run many games with little eye candy on. For example, if you keep settings low or medium, you can expect closer to 40FPS on Battlefield 4. Some lighter titles, like Counter-Strike: GO, will give you double or more.

Dell Inspiron 3847 i3847-3851BK contains 8 USB ports in total. Two USB 2.0s are in front and four USB 2.0 and two USB 3.0 are located in the back panel. There are also VGA and HDMI outs available. They support a dual monitor configuration.

Networking interfaces are all you need, the desktop features Gigabit RJ-45 port and 802.11n WiFi adapter. Bluetooth 4.0 works, too.

DVD burner and 8-in-1 media card reader are available in the front panel.

Some other things to keep in mind?

Dell Inspiron 3847 i3847-3851BK can be upgraded if you want to. According to the manual, it has two 5.25″ and two 3.5″ bays for drives. There are two PCI-e x1 and one PCI-e x16 slot, and as far as I know, at least the other x1 and the x16 are free. As such, you’re able to put a dedicated graphics card inside.

Monitor is not shipped with the unit, but basic USB keyboard and mouse are.

The operating system is Windows 8.1 (64-bit).

Summing it up

As said in the beginning, Dell Inspiron 3847 i3847-3851BK is a basic desktop. It has no bells and whistles, but all the necessities should be included. You can surf the web, play some games (on low settings) and stream videos off Internet with no problems. Connections are everything you need, with HDMI and VGA ports allowing you to hook up many sorts of displays (including HDTV). The model is quite old release, but of course it’s in new condition, and for the current price I’d say it makes a good everyday computer to your household.
