Dell i3169-0011RED is one of the new, (supposedly) useful 2-in-1 laptops where the screen rotates so much you essentially have both laptop and tablet in one device. To many, that’s cool for sure, but how about other areas such as performance of this laptop…?

The good

For the price, the processor in Dell i3169-0011RED is not bad at all. It’s the late 2015 release Intel Core m3-6Y30, a dual-core mobile processor with 0.9GHz clock speed and 2.2Ghz turbo. Indeed the base frequency is slow, but the average CPU Mark score is still around 3000 (in comparison Core i3s of the 4th generation got 2500-3000). Furthermore, the memory amount is decent 4GB. That’s a very tight setup for a home user, no ordinary programs should lag here. Just keep in mind the official spec sheet says the RAM can not be upgraded.

The neutral

The storage drive in Dell i3169-0011RED is both good and bad. Good in that it offers quite a lot of space, 500GB. Bad in that it’s a platter-based drive with 5400RPM spindle speed. That is going to affect the performance somewhat; you’re not going to see SSD-like transfer rates here – unless, of course, you install one inside. It’s definitely possible, the interface is SATA 3.

This model comes with a 32Whr 2-cell battery, a lightweight unit, which will give you six hours tops with web surfing on conservative screen brightness.

The 11.6-inch display should have decent image quality, the 1366×768 resolution is not wonderful but you can’t expect more without also paying more. Touch is naturally supported and the hinge works 360 degrees, so there’s tablet mode in addition to normal laptop. At all times, the display part stays connected to the keyboard. On top, there is a webcam that supports up to 1280×720 resolution for video.

The unit doesn’t came with an optical drive because of the small size. There is however a microSD(HC/XC) card slot, you can use that for data transfers or to increase the local storage.

Want to connect a peripheral or two? No problem, there are one USB 3.0 and two USB 2.0 ports waiting for you. In addition, normal-sized HDMI-out is there for plugging in a monitor. Networking is handled by the wireless adapter (802.11bgn standard with Bluetooth 4.0 supported).

Dell i3169-0011RED doesn’t have a backlit keyboard.

The bad

Intel HD 515 is the name of the graphics engine here. And guess what? It’s integrated in the processor. So it’s definitely a slow one. For example, if you’re into GTA 5, you’ll get ~25FPS on low settings and 720p resolution. That is not ideal but not a disaster either. Fallout 4 would be even worse, not really having playable frame rates. On the other hand, lighter games work fine, for example Counter-Strike: Go with +30FPS even on high presets.

Dell i3169-0011RED is a capable convertible laptop, the core m3 processor with 4GB RAM will be more than sufficient for daily computer use, and you can even try to throw in some exotic programs like Photoshop now and then. Still, there’s not much of gaming performance present due to feeble integrated graphics. The display is small and multi-use, and the 1366×768 resolution is well accepted for this price. It seems to be a very decent 2-in-1, if that’s what you’re after then do take a closer look at this Dell!
