With Dell i3168-0027RED, you don’t need to spend a lot of money. The notebook happens to be one of the cheapest models currently available which, if you ask me, makes it a desirable choice for many. But there is always a “price” to pay when something is cheap, so let’s not draw any conclusions before taking a closer look at this item…

The good

Dell i3168-0027RED is extremely compact and multi-use. The 11.6-inch display (1366×768 maximum resolution) means you can easily travel with this 3.2 pounds unit. Operating angle of the screen is 0-360 degrees and it naturally supports touch, so you can use it in both laptop and tablet modes. The display part doesn’t detach from the keyboard.

Performance is sufficient for lightweight tasks such as browsing the Internet or MS Office. The low-end Intel Celeron N3060 is enough for such activities, the dual-core processor features 1.6Ghz clock speed and 2.5Ghz turbo frequency. CPU Mark gives it ~1000 points. There is 2GB memory installed by default on the only SODIMM slot in this machine. The specifications mention 2GB is the maximum for this unit, further reinforcing the idea that heavyweight applications are off-limits.

The neutral

There’s one thing you should know about the storage of Dell i3168-0027RED. It’s listed as 32GB SSD, but it’s not really a solid-state drive. It’s an eMMC (embedded MultiMediaCard), a stripped-down version of SSD. Surely it’s faster than old spinning hard drives but still not as fast and durable as a real solid-state drive. And remember that after Windows 10 installation files there will be around 20 gigabytes free for your files.

You can hook up some peripherals to this notebook. It contains two USB 2.0 and one USB 3.0 port for different devices and one HDMI-out for an external monitor. RJ-45 isn’t present, but 802.11bgn WiFi card with Bluetooth 4.0 support is installed.

The laptop does not have an optical drive. One microSD/SDHC/SDXC card slot is available.

There’s a 2-cell 32Whr battery included, you’ll reach 5-6 hours operating time with web surfing.

Webcam is positioned on top of the screen, it supports 1270×720 resolution at 30fps for video.

The case is plastic, like it always is in these cheaper models. Backlit keyboard isn’t available.

The bad

Dell i3168-0027RED surely is a bad laptop for gaming. The Braswell-based processor has a new but very slow integrated graphics engine called Intel HD 400 (yep, not 4000 but 400). Benchmarks aren’t available for this unit yet, but expect only older games like Counter-Strike: Go, WoW and Minecraft run on low to medium settings here.

A laptop like Dell i3168-0027RED might be a good idea for a traveler who doesn’t depend on demanding programs. The baseline performance is good for web browsing and even YouTube videos, but most games would be too much for the Celeron processor and other components. The size is indeed small and battery life decent so on-the-go computing works. Choose this Dell if compact frame, budget performance and affordable price is what tickles your fancy!
