The gaming side of notebooks has always been a little problematic: either you get a basic laptop and it’s too slow for gaming, or you get a great player’s rig which costs an arm and leg. I must say Dell AW15R3-10881SLV belongs to the latter group. If you have the money it might be worth it, but check out my thoughts on it before you go and buy…
How good for gaming?
Dell AW15R3-10881SLV is an expensive laptop and has appropriate graphics matching the price. Indeed, the new GeForce GTX 1070 (including 8GB GDDR5 memory) is running that show. Being one of the best cards there currently exists you can be sure to get top frame rates. Here are some examples – Full HD resolution and ultra settings:
– The Witcher 3, +80FPS
– Battlefield 4, +100FPS
– Doom, +90FPS
Indeed, you can maximize settings on any game, it will run smooth like nobody’s business. You could actually use even higher resolution than 1080p but the display supports just Full HD.
Being so fancy laptop, Dell AW15R3-10881SLV enjoys desktop-level performance in the engine room. The 6th generation processor is Intel Core i7-6700, giving you a quad-core setup, and a whopping 3.4GHz base frequency with 4.0GHz turbo boost. So yeah, it’s a desktop processor in notebook, the popular CPU Mark score gives it ~10000 points. About no processor in laptop gets more, so plenty of performance will be in reserves no matter what you do with this rig.
You can also believe this Alienware has got the storage section down. There are two drives installed, one is 1TB 7200RPM hard drive and other one 256GB SSD attached to PCIe slot. The good thing is, operating system (Windows 10 Home) is installed in the SSD. When you boot up the laptop you’ll see it takes around 5 seconds to login screen.
The computer has 16GB DDR4 2400MHz memory which is fairly sufficient amount even for the most demanding folks. Inside you will find two 8GB sticks which take the both memory slots. The most RAM you can go to is 32GB.
Ports and connections
There are many holes in the sides and back of Dell AW15R3-10881SLV, but don’t worry, they are ports to which you can plug many peripherals. Included are three USB 3.0 ports of which one is Type-C supported. Also Thunderbolt 3 with USB Type-C connector is available.
Ports to hook up your monitor to are a full-sized HDMI-out and mini DisplayPort. Also external graphics connector is there which literally means using external graphics card is possible.
The networking ports are all you could ask for: 1000Mbps Ethernet circuit with RJ-45 and WiFi 802.11ac card with Bluetooth 4.1 enabled.
Some other important things?
Gaming should be effortless with the 15.6 inches display. Dell AW15R3-10881SLV has this cookie cutter diagonal size, but the unit is still rather heavy – 7.7 pounds which is a lot for any laptop. The highest resolution you will get is 1920×1080 with this IPS TN panel. It’s an anti-glare display with a maximum 300 nit brightness. There’s been a lot of debate on the G-Sync, and as far as I know this model has G-sync enabled with refresh rate being 60hz.
The notebook comes with a large battery, a 6-cell 99Whr one. On such a grandiose unit getting two hours under gameplay should be possible.
Of course the laptop includes a backlit keyboard.
Dell AW15R3-10881SLV is a beast: it looks like one and has a performance of one. There is simply no game that is too heavyweight for the unit, the GTX 1070 card with Core i7 processor and SSD will take care of every player’s needs on Full HD and beyond. Obviously, for any kind of software use the notebook is also the real deal. But it’s very far from a portable model with almost 8 pounds weight. So if you want a stationary, super powerful gaming laptop and you’re not short on money, this Dell should deliver just what you want!
