There is a host of gaming desktops to choose from if you’re into that stuff. But, most of them share the same problem: they are very expensive! So finding a budget gaming computer is one of the tougher tasks of today. But let me tell you, they do surely exist. One example is CybertronPC Electrum QS-A6 that costs the same than an average home desktop. But the million dollar question is, is it then fast enough for games or not..?

Gaming performance

The important thing about CybertronPC Electrum QS-A6 is that the graphics card is not dedicated, but integrated AMD Radeon R5. So, even though it’s marketed as a gaming computer, out of the box it isn’t that heavyweight rig. Many games are playable but the newest ones only on low settings and 720p resolution. For example, Battlefield 4 would be in the ~40FPS range and GTA at ~30FPS. Games that are older, like Counter-Strike: Go, World of Warcraft and Minecraft (+60FPS) however run smooth with this integrated graphics.

But don’t despair. The situation can be fixed. The motherboard contains a free PCI-e x16 slot and to that, a dedicated graphics card can be installed. GeForce GTX 10xx units fit nicely inside.

Good for other kinds of use?

Any gaming desktop works wonders for software use. You see, the components have to be fast enough for gaming, and it’s one of the most taxing things you can do on a computer! However, in the case of this particular system, at least the processor isn’t state-of-the-art choice: the AMD A6-7400K is a dual-core chip of 3.5GHz clock speed and 3.9GHz turbo, and it has a performance of mobile processor (CPU Mark score around 2800). But yes, no matter the program, it will run good even on that AMD uniy.

CybertronPC Electrum QS-A6 is equipped with 16 gigabytes of DDR3 memory. It’s an amount that should please anybody and I don’t see a reason to upgrade it. There should be one free RAM slot for adding more if you insist.

A typical storage solution is found here, it’s a 1TB 7200RPM hard drive. I think there are quite many people who want something else, like a solid-state drive. Well, you’re in luck because there’s a free 3.5″ bay and few 2.5″ bays inside. To them, installing a new drive is effortless!

Does it have enough ports and connections?

There are a lot of USB ports in CybertronPC Electrum QS-A6, yet don’t forget they are mostly of the version 2.0 – six are USB 2.0 and only two USB 3.0. So if you have many peripherals that require USB bandwidth, plug them to the 3.0 ports! Mouse and such can be used with the USB 2.0 no problem.

The ports to hook up your monitor to are one VGA and one HDMI-output. I’m pretty sure that dual monitor setup is supported even though it’s only integrated graphics here. At any rate, if you install dedicated graphics, getting triple monitors to work at the same time is possible.

Now, hear this, the desktop does not have optical drive. And as far as I know, there’s not even a slot for one inside. So the only way to use DVDs is to get an external optical drive. The good thing is, they cost very little, like 25 dollars.

The desktop contains a Gigabit RJ-45 port ready to connect you to Internet. However, what it doesn’t contain is a WiFi adapter! The motherboard anyway has a free PCI and PCI-e x1 slot if you want to install a wireless card. An easier option is also possible, a USB to WiFi dongle.

The audio supports 7.1 channel sound, hence plugging in speakers and a subwoofer is not an issue here.

What other important things are there?

CybertronPC Electrum QS-A6 operates on a 400W power supply. Obviously, for the current build, it is fine. For many graphics card, such as GTX 1060 and GTX 750 Ti it also works, but the beefy GTX 1080 works best with at least 500W PSU. So, depending on the card you’re upgrading to, may be also the power supply needs to be replaced.

The desktop comes with a corded keyboard and mouse. Probably not a surprise to you, there’s no monitor included. So the set will cost around 200 dollars more if you’re getting a decent monitor for this, too.

Operating system is the best one there currently is, the Windows 10 Home 64-bit edition.

Verdict

Somebody said that CybertronPC Electrum QS-A6 is a good starting point to PC gaming, and that is spot on! As long as you don’t mistake it for a real heavyweight gaming computer you are fine. The popular games such as Minecraft, DayZ and League of Legends run like nobody’s business – only if you want to play so-called Triple A games and enjoy maxed out graphics, a graphics card upgrade comes into question (and adding one is easy here!). But for all the casual gamers this rig is good as it is – we recommend to take a closer look at it!
