I am aware that computer gaming is a dear hobby for many, and those gamers generally want to spend as little money as possible for their desktops. Well, the sad thing is, gaming computers are often pricey, requiring a big investment from your side. But a less-known brand, CyberPowerPC, is getting more popular every day. It seems to combat the issue of over-expensive gaming desktops quite effectively. Here is one of their affordable models, the CYBERPOWERPC Gamer Ultra GUA540.

How good is it for gaming then?

You might think CYBERPOWERPC Gamer Ultra GUA540 is a beast for gaming because its name is Gaming Desktop, right? Well, not really, it’s not a high-performance computer. The graphics card is an older model, the AMD Radeon R5 230 with just 1GB video RAM. Many games that are from the past, such as World of Warcraft or League of Legends, are not an issue to run. A bit more demanding one, such as GTA 5, would need lower settings to get frame rates in the 40 per second range. The list of unplayable games include The Witcher 3, there’s not enough oomph in the card for that.

As a side note, nothing comes on your way if you want to upgrade the current Radeon engine for a faster graphics card!

Performance in general

CYBERPOWERPC Gamer Ultra GUA540 relies on AMD, and not only in the graphics department. Also processor comes from that company – it’s the AMD FX-6300. It’s marketed as a six-core processor, although there are only three physical cores in the unit. The clock speed is a high 3.5GHz while there’s also turbo speed which ups the frequency to 4.1 gigahertz. The processor comes from the late 2012, but still holds a respectable ~6400 score in CPU Mark benchmark tests.

For the RAM you are getting 8GB DDR3. Yes, there is no DDR4. DDR3 was the only choice when this desktop was released a few years ago. I believe you can upgrade the memory to sixteen gigabytes at least – that is actually something many gamers often do!

The hard drive choice does not surprise for such a cheap model. Inside the case you’ll find a regular, spinning one-terabyte 7200RPM drive. It will promptly accept all of your files, a terabyte storage space is very much. On the other hand, performance isn’t that good. From experience I happen to know these CyberpowerPC desktops have free bays – at least 3.5″ one – so feel free to install extra SSD inside if you feel you need it.

Does it have good selection of ports?

There are somewhat useful ports in the desktop. Nine USB connectors are available which is quite a whopping amount. But all of them are USB 2.0 – there are zero USB 3.0 connectors in this unit. It’s not a big issue if you won’t use USB devices that require a lot of bandwidth, such as optical drives or USB sticks with a lot (+100GB) of data.

The maximum number of displays you can connect to CYBERPOWERPC Gamer Ultra GUA540 is three. The Radeon card contains HDMI, DVI and VGA outputs for you to play with. It’s good to favor the HDMI if you just connect one monitor, it’s going to give you the best image quality I’m sure!

There is a speedy Gigabit Ethernet (RJ-45) port to get you connected to Internet. Unfortunately WiFi is not supported out of the box. If you want wireless you need to install either WiFi card yourself or use USB dongle.

As you can see from the photo, a DVD burner (24X) is installed in front panel. Below it are a couple of free bays to add more optical drives if you want.

Any other interesting things about the desktop?

A sad thing for many people, CYBERPOWERPC Gamer Ultra GUA540 does not include a monitor. Actually, desktops rarely do. Luckily keyboard and mouse, both wired, are included.

I believe the power supply has 500W wattage. Thus, you need not upgrade it even if you are adding a faster graphics engine to this desktop.

As I have said before, these cheap CyberpowerPCs are a decent choice for your first gaming desktop. Yes, there is a reason they are cheap: the graphics performance is not top-notch. If you don’t require all the eye candy there’s no reason to skip the desktop – but yes, do remember that many new games only run on low settings. Also keep in mind that because it’s a smaller brand the desktop is easy to upgrade – adding a beefier graphics card happens in the blink of an eye. On a tight budget you should choose something like CYBERPOWERPC Gamer Ultra GUA540, that is my advice!
