No use for a large office printer? A simple monochrome laser like Brother HLL2380DW could be everything you need. True, it only prints in black and white, but does that fast and without breaking your bank. Below, I’ll tell you more about the advantages and possible drawbacks this machine has.

Features

To begin with, Brother HLL2380DW has additional functions besides printing. It supports copying and color scanning, although fax is missing. An All-in-One device like this might be a smart choice depending on your needs. At least offices usually have use for all those functions.

Being a proper printer, the Brother has a high quality display. It’s a 2.7″ color touchscreen whereas very cheap models usually come with one or two line mono displays. You’ll get a feel of an expensive printer for rather inexpensive price, so to speak.

Paper handling is similar to competitors. The input tray takes 250 sheets while the output paper capacity is 100 papers. There’s also a single-sheet manual bypass tray, and both inputs support 8.5″ x 14″ (legal) paper. The biggest media size for scanner and copier is A4/letter.

A rather standard features these days, automatic duplex printing (but no duplex scanning) is available. However, there’s no automatic document feeder installed, so you must put paper in one at a time for the copier and scanner.

You can connect your computer or mobile device via 802.11b/g/n WiFi, 10/100Mbps Ethernet (RJ-45) or USB 2.0. USB cable is not included. The printer works with laptops, desktops and most smart phones & tablets thanks to the built-in AirPrint and Google Cloud Print support. Computer operating systems that work with this Brother are Windows XP and above, Mac OS X 10.7.x and above and Ubuntu & other Linux distributions.

The unit dimensions are 16.1″ x 15.7″ x 10.5″ (WxDxH), which means it’s much smaller than a full-feature office printer.

Performance

The top speed for Brother HLL2380DW is 32 pages per minute, and user reports suggest the real printing speed is very close to that. It’s quite a fast printer, and in best case you’ll get page out of it every two seconds. First print out is 8.5 seconds so you don’t have to wait much in the beginning, either.

The memory is capped at 64MB. It’s double from what you usually see in low-end business printers, and should be enough for monochrome printing needs of small offices. Same can be said about the monthly duty cycle (10,000 pages maximum, 250-2000 pages recommended): you can safely print around 60 pages every day.

Costs

In addition to the acquisition price, you must also take cost per page into account when calculating expenses. There’s a starter toner included with Brother HLL2380DW that works for 700 pages, but after that you must buy more. It might be wise to go for the high yield TN660 toner that’s good for 2600 sheets. With the current TN660 rate, a cost per page would be tad below 2 cents. A reasonable price, which you can further reduce by using 3rd party toner like E-Z Ink.

Summing it up

Reading the user reports and taking a look at the specifications & price I can see why Brother HLL2380DW is a popular printer. It does its job well, fast and with affordable cost. There’s no faxer or ADF available but for the price I can overlook the missing features. Based on this and other reviews, make up your mind. That said, I certainly recommend this Brother for your black and white printing needs.

I needed ink cartridges for my HP………again. $60.00 for a set and it will not run on BLK only, you need to buy the color as well, even if you never use them!!! Best Buy was running a sale on the Brother HL-L2380 DW, $129.95 – a little more than 2 sets of HP ink. Including the starter toner for 700 pages. I might print /copy 100 pages in a year. A no brainer. The item arrived with free shipping in 2 days, copied perfectly out of the box. I have a Macbook Pro, no CD slot so I had to call Brother for help in setting it up….10 minutes. I print wirelessly from the Mac as well as my wife printing her coupons from her I-pad. Great machine. Trouble free. Next I want to set up the scan feature……wish me luck!
