One category of notebooks is extremely sought after: gaming laptops that don’t cost a lot. Playing games is rather popular hobby however not everybody wants to spend thousands for a bleeding edge gaming rig. Instead, something like ASUS ZX53VW might be a proper choice for them. It comes with dedicated GeForce graphics and huge SSD, a nice features for sure, but let’s see if it’s really a laptop worthy of your time and money or not…
How good for gaming?
ASUS ZX53VW is equipped with the older GeForce 960M, a mobile-level graphics card with 4GB GDDR5 dedicated memory. You’re looking at a mid-range gaming engine: every game can be played on this machine, but with most demanding ones you will definitely need to lower the settings. Here are examples of some popular games running on a laptop similar to this (Full HD resolution and high settings):
– GTA 5, ~45FPS
– Battlefield 4, ~50FPS
– The Witcher 3, ~25FPS
In my opinion it’s decent frame rates considering the level of eye candy. Just bear in mind you can not upgrade the graphics card on this machine.
ASUS ZX53VW seems to come with DDR4 memory, with 8GB of that installed. The maximum is 24GB – there’s one slot for memory stick and a portion is soldered.
The processor choice is great, the desktop-level Intel Core i5-6300HQ offering all of its four cores to your use. The clock speed starts at 2.3GHz and increases to 3.2GHz when turbo boost is on. With the ~5900 points in CPU Mark the processor gets you’ll find no troubles using this thing for software lightweight or demanding!
The 512GB SSD (M.2 2280) is the best thing you’ll get with this ASUS. It can hold a lot of data and on the other hand offers a nice performance boost for the impatient: Windows will boot up in a matter of seconds. There’s also space for an extra 2.5″ drive in case you want to install one.
Ports and connections
ASUS ZX53VW comes with a DVD burner unlike the other version with GTX 1060 and 1TB hard drive. But both have media card reader (SD & MMC), slipping in those memory cards is convenient.
To connect your devices there are two USB 3.0, one USB 2.0 and one USB Type-C port to choose from. Plugging in an external monitor (if you so choose) happens with the laptop’s HDMI output.
A quick 802.11ac WiFi & Bluetooth adapter is included, however you may also use the Gigabit RJ-45 port the notebook offers.
What other interesting things it has?
ASUS ZX53VW comes with a Full HD 15.6″ non-touch display that has TN panel, according to rumors. Gaming should anyway be very enjoyable on it, and the same goes for day-to-day work and graphics editing. The screen has a webcam in the top panel.
The battery sadly is one of the worse things in this laptop, it only gives like 3 hours on web surfing and such. Moreover, the battery is integrated.
The keyboard has backlight.
ASUS ZX53VW is a reasonable acquisition for budget gaming. There’s everything to get you started, and the dedicated GeForce GTX960M will plow through any game provided you’re not too greedy with settings on some titles. The laptop works wonders for non-gaming stuff such as Photoshopping, the display is beautiful said people who bought this rig. And don’t forget you will get a great 512GB solid-state drive, that’s really one of the best things in a notebook these days. If you can overlook the poor battery life, this computer will make you a happy gamer!
