A nice ultrabook with snappy performance is something that tickles your fancy, mmkay? Then you might’ve seen ASUS Zenbook UX330UA-AH54. It’s a 13.3 inches Full HD notebook with decent components and favorable reviews. These things tell a lot about the computer, but below you’ll find my professional and critical view on it…

The good

ASUS Zenbook UX330UA-AH54 enjoys the latest technology of processors, the Kaby Lake based Intel Core i5-7200U. It’s a 7th generation dual-core model with decent 2.5 – 3.1GHz (turbo) clock speed. You can expect better processor performance than the previous i5-6200U, the new version has ~4800 CPU Mark points while the older around 4000. The i5-7200U is considered a power user processor, run any program on it and you’ll see how fast the CPU is.

Solid-state drive is the only acceptable storage solution for such an ultrabook. Indeed, inside the ASUS you will find a 256GB SSD. The laptop does not have extra bays or slots for more drives but I think the current SSD is all you need.

The display’s compact 13.3″ diagonal means this whole unit is rather small, portability is great. The screen supports Full HD resolution. It has a matte coating and IPS panel which should give wide, around 180 degree viewing angles. The screen has no touch support. Installed in the top bezel is a webcam.

The neutral

ASUS Zenbook UX330UA-AH54 has soldered 8GB DDR3 RAM. It should be fine, just remember you can’t upgrade it.

The ports in this model are quite alright given the small size. You will find two USB 3.0 and one USB 3.1 Type-C there, and one Micro-HDMI if you want to use the laptop with PC monitor or HD television. RJ-45 for networking cable isn’t included but you can use the computer’s excellent 802.11ac wireless card which also supports Bluetooth 4.1.

Optical drive is understandably left out, there’s no space for that. However memory card reader is included like in any notebook.

The laptop contains a non-user replaceable battery. People have reported it lasts 8 or 9 hours for lightweight tasks (web surfing, text editing). That’s a pretty decent amount for an ultrabook.

The bad

I wouldn’t count on ASUS Zenbook UX330UA-AH54 when it comes to gaming. The graphics solution is Intel HD 620 and you might already know it’s integrated on the Core i5 processor. So, no dedicated graphics here (and not possible to install one either). You are still good to play games but you really need to mind the settings: low and 720p resolution will give around 30FPS on GTA 5 and Battlefield 4. On the other hand, something like Counter-Strike: Go which doesn’t require a lot would have smooth frame rates even on high settings and 1080p.

For some reason they left out a backlit keyboard from this model.

Final thoughts

ASUS Zenbook UX330UA-AH54 is full of top-notch components: the latest Core i5 processor and solid-state drive to name a few. These things should make sure a power user enjoys the laptop, and the 13.3″ 1080p screen will put a smile on digital artist’s face. The connections are good with USB Type-C port and all. As the unit is small (around 2.8 pounds) you’ll find it a good companion for traveling. I recommend to check out this little beast!
