Asus Republic of Gamers is pretty self-explanatory line of hardware and computers. They’re meant to provide the ultimate performance, the everything it takes for a gamer to receive top frame rates and worry-free gaming environment. Asus ROG Strix GL702VM-DB74 is one of the laptops promising all that, but let’s see if it’s actually up for the task or not…
Gaming in nutshell
You will enjoy one of the best graphics engines with Asus ROG Strix GL702VM-DB74. It includes the GeForce GTX 1060, a new card by Nvidia with 6GB video RAM. Sweet, but the amount of memory isn’t that important, what might interest you more is the actual performance. Well, benchmarks state that the old GeForce GTX980 still beats it, but this GTX 1060 is faster than GTX 970. So, turn on Full HD resolution and max out the settings, you will still get much more than 60 frames per second even on high-end games like the latest Doom!
Another treat on this computer is the processor: a quad-core Intel Core i7-6700HQ which offers a solid 2.6GHz clock speed and even solider (that a word?) 3.5GHz turbo. With this kind of a setup you’re looking at a ~8000 CPU Mark score which is better than most other processors get. A demanding piece of software will be not a problem for this rig – especially when you remember there is 16GB DDR4 RAM installed.
Storage drives are two, a 1TB 7200RPM hard drive and 256GB M.2 SATA 3 solid-state drive. The configuration is excellent, allowing for plenty of storage and performance at the same time. You can replace both drives if you want.
If you’re not content with the display Asus ROG Strix GL702VM-DB74 offers, you can hook up an external monitor to its HDMI-out and miniDisplayPort connectors. There’s also USB 3 Type-C and a couple of regular USB 3.0 ports for connecting peripherals.
For networking RJ-45 jack and 802.11ac WiFi + Bluetooth 4.0 adapter are provided.
The notebook features no DVD burner, but the good thing is, you can always buy external optical drive for cheap.
Miscellaneous things and features
I don’t think there’s anything wrong with the display, check this out: 17.3 inches, Full HD resolution, G-Sync support and 160 degree viewing angles (probably means IPS panel). It should be beautiful to look at and fast for gaming. Touch isn’t supported but I don’t think that’s important anyway.
The 4-cell 76Whrs battery looks excellent on paper, however I think in real life you won’t go very far with it. Two hours under gameplay you will get, then recharge is needed.
The keyboard has backlight.
Not many laptops currently in market surpass Asus ROG Strix GL702VM-DB74 in terms of gaming performance. The reason is the new GeForce GTX 1060 card which beats almost every older card, and allows for effortless Full HD (and even beyond, although this laptop’s screen supports maximum 1080p resolution) gaming. And since all the other components are in check too, including Core i7 processor and solid-state drive, I can only recommend this computer for the most devout of gamers out there!
