Asus ROG Strix GL702VM-DB71 is one of the premium laptops that promises a heaven for the players: smooth Full HD frame rates, all the way. That might very well be possible, after all there is a 17.3 inches display and GeForce GTX 1060 running the show… But let’s not judge the laptop so hastily, a closer examination must be carried out first.

Gaming performance

GeForce GTX 1060 with 6GB video RAM is the name of the graphics card. It’s one of the new GTX 1000 series, the other ones being GTX 1070 and 1080. Comparing to older cards, the GTX 1060 beats GTX 970, however GTX 980 is still faster than it. To give you some examples, GTX 1060 will run any games on Full HD and maxed out settings, for example Battlefield 4 with +90 FPS and even The Witcher 3 at ~50 frames per second.

Other components under the hood

Asus ROG Strix GL702VM-DB71 has a familiar processor, the Intel Core i7-6700HQ with a full quad-core setup, 2.6GHz clock speed and turbo up to 3.5GHz. It’s faster than most processors (CPU Mark score being around 8000), so for gaming and other heavy-duty software the processor is ideal. So is the 16GB DDR4 RAM that’s installed by default, and there’s one slot open which allows you to upgrade to 32GB if you want.

This particular model seems to come with only 1TB 7200RPM hard drive. It’s bit of a bummer there’s no SSD installed. But the good thing is, there is a free M.2 PCIe/NVME slot inside, so if you know something about these things, you can install a solid-state drive here!

What ports and connections are included?

Asus ROG Strix GL702VM-DB71 offers two video outputs, HDMI 2.0 and miniDisplayPort, so you can effortlessly hook up an external monitor to this. In addition, there are three USB 3.0 and one USB 3.1 Type-C connector which allow you to plug in many peripherals.

The laptop doesn’t have an optical drive but you can always use external one! SD card slot is available, though.

It has a Gigabit Ethernet port and 802.11ac WiFi adapter (with Bluetooth 4.1 support) for networking.

Other important things

Asus ROG Strix GL702VM-DB71 got a sweet screen: 17.3″ Full HD display with matter panel and hardware G-Sync (60hz) support. Viewing angles are 160 per specifications. Touch is not available, not a big issue for gamers I guess. The webcam supports 1.2MP video resolution.

As you can guess, the 4-cell 62Whrs internal battery is garbage for playing. Under gameplay, it lasts only an hour or so. So you’d better have power socket nearby!

Asus ROG Strix GL702VM-DB71 is the essential tool for a gamer. The new GeForce GTX 1060 can take gamer far, especially when it’s Full HD gaming we’re talking about. With the 17.3 inches display it’s a real desktop replacement – you can still carry this thing in your bag (although it’s quite bulky and heavy!). Anyway, if you have your finances in check, this Asus is all a player needs!

Your review states “the GTX 1060 beats GTX 970, however GTX 980 is still faster than it.” This is incorrect. The 1060 is actually faster than a 980 by ~%10. It is comparable in performance to the 980ti, which is a higher tier card than the 980.

Thanks for the comment. I used Video Card Benchmark as my source. GTX 980 gets 9720 points and GTX 1060 gets 9187 points. Surely the difference isn’t that big, and GTX 1060 is much cheaper card (250 dollars, while GTX 980 is over 400 bucks) so GTX 1060 is a better choice these days anyway.
