Let me tell you the most essential thing about ASUS ROG STRIX GL502VT-DS74. It’s a gaming notebook with a huge price tag – you’re supposed to be well-off to get this beast. But because the laptop is so expensive it must also offer you something in return, right? Let’s see…
The gaming aspect
It’s indeed the gaming side of things that ASUS ROG STRIX GL502VT-DS74 excels at. GeForce GTX970M (6GB video RAM) is running the system, and it’s still one of the fastest graphics engines there exists. You can shoot for high (or even maxed out settings) with any game and it’s going to be a smooth sail. Let me show you some FPS examples:
– Grand Theft Auto 5, ultra settings and 1080p: ~30FPS
– Fallout 4, ultra settings and 1080p, ~40FPS
– The Witcher 3, ultra settings and 1080p, ~35FPS
How about general performance?
ASUS ROG STRIX GL502VT-DS74 is pricey so all the remaining components are flashy too. The processor is Intel Core i7-6700HQ, a quad-core CPU with 2.6 – 3.5GHz clock frequency, the latter attainable with turbo. It’s one of the heaviest processors currently available, any type of software will bend to its will. You’ll also get a lot of help from the 16GB DDR4 memory, and you should even be able to upgrade to 32GB.
There are two units in the storage section: a 1TB 7200RPM hard drive and a 128GB SATA 3 solid-state drive attached to M.2 interface. That gives you the best of both worlds: a lot of raw storage but great performance too.
What connections does the system offer?
There are several USB ports in ASUS ROG STRIX GL502VT-DS74 for connecting things like gaming mouse or an optical drive. Three USB 3.0 and one USB-C Gen 2 are found on the sides of the unit. You’ll also find RJ-45 LAN port (a Gigabit one) if you want to hook up a network cable. Surely there’s still 802.11ac WiFi adapter with Bluetooth 4.0 support if you want the wireless networking way.
Video outputs include miniDisplayPort and HDMI – you’ll be able to connect HD television to this laptop and play through the TV if you want.
If you keep looking for an optical drive you won’t find one on this laptop. Instead, you’ll need to connect an external DVD burner to use discs. Memory card reader is included for micro SD format.
Miscellaneous but important features
The 4-cell battery is good for 3-4 hours web surfing and 2 hours gaming. The advertised six hours sadly won’t happen here.
You’ll be looking at the 15.6″ IPS matte screen, featuring 1920×1080 resolution. It doesn’t have G-Sync or touch support. A webcam is embedded on top, it has 1.2MP resolution for video.
The keyboard comes with backlight.
ASUS ROG STRIX GL502VT-DS74 is made first and foremost to ensure one thing: for avid gamers to happily play any game they toss at their laptop. The GTX970M card with the i7 processor will surely hold great frame rates even on the latest first person shooters. Heavy software work such as video editing will be a piece of cake as well. The bad thing would be weight (6.2 pounds) and battery life, the bane of all gaming laptops. But all in all, is such an expensive, high-quality notebook a recommended choice? Sure, if you take your gaming hobby seriously!
