It’s time for another “affordable” gaming laptop, a certain ASUS ROG GL752VW-DH71. It’s equipped with state-of-the-art components like Core i7 processor, dedicated graphics card and a neat Full HD screen. Impressing, yes, but similar things are found in many gaming notebooks. Is there something that makes this laptop stand out from the crowd, and moreover would it really make sense to get it?

General performance

It looks like ASUS ROG GL752VW-DH71 has one of the best processors currently available. Named Intel Core i7-6700HQ, the chip features 2.6GHz clock speed and 3.5GHz turbo. Core amount is of course four, and average CPU Mark over 8000. That is certainly a great score, and should allow you to multitask the heck out of this computer (and run demanding applications) without system bogging and lagging.

Memory is the latest DDR4 type, totaling at 16GB. Two memory sockets reside on the mainboard, both occupied by 8GB sticks. Since there are single 16GB DDR4 sticks available (as opposed to maximum 8GB DDR3 modules), I would imagine this laptop supports a maximum 32GB RAM – even though Q&A on Amazon’s product page states otherwise.

The hard drive is a no-frills 1TB 7200RPM unit. The laptop doesn’t have additional storage drive bay, although there seems to be one M.2 slot in this model. So replacing the current drive or adding one to the M.2 slot is the way to go for extra storage.

How is the display?

Not much is known about the screen here. It’s a 17.3″ IPS display with Full HD resolution, critical users and professionals should be good to go with it. Considering the notebook features a strong graphics card, using the system with Full HD all the time should be possible. Touch is not supported, not a surprise for such a gaming machine.

What games does it run?

ASUS ROG GL752VW-DH71 works with any game, thanks to dedicated GeForce GTX960M (2GB GDDR5) gaming card. Now, some might say it’s not a high-end gaming card which I can agree on – but still sufficient for keeping medium-high settings and 1080p with any game as of late 2015. For example, using high and 1920×1080 with Witcher 3 would give ~30FPS and GTA 5 closer to 60 frames per second.

Ports and connections

ASUS ROG GL752VW-DH71 has five USB ports to choose from, two are USB 2.0 and three USB 3.0. The only video output is HDMI. A Gigabit RJ-45 LAN jack is there for plugging in a cable for Internet, but of course a quality 802.11ac WiFi + Bluetooth 4.0 card is also available for wireless.

The laptop includes a DVD burner in case some of your games need to be installed from discs. SD(HC/XC) and MMC card slot is also there for slipping in a memory card full of photos etc.

You can talk to your gaming friends in HD thanks to the built-in 1.2MP webcam.

Anything else to keep in mind?

As always with gaming laptops, you won’t find this ASUS ROG GL752VW-DH71 a good traveling companion. Consider it weighs 6.6 pounds and operating time isn’t going to exceed 2-3 hours under web surfing I’m afraid. In addition, you wont surpass 1.5-2 hours if you’re gaming. The 48Whrs 4-cell battery here isn’t so beefy, that’s the reason.

Keyboard has red-backlit keys and the pre-loaded operating system is Windows 10.

Verdict

ASUS ROG GL752VW-DH71 is a notebook that does its primary job, keeping up smooth frame rates on high settings, fine: the GeForce GTX960M isn’t exactly wonderful, but reaching the excellent 60FPS will happen with many games – especially if you can skimp on settings a bit in case you’re playing an extremely demanding game. Other features, such as backlit keyboard and large 17.3″ Full HD screen complement the strong(ish) graphics performance. Not an overpriced item by any means, if you think what I just described is good for you, there’s a good reason to get this ASUS!

Hi Ibrahim. Take a look at this listing, it’s pretty much the same laptop than the one reviewed here. A customer review stated: “The single fan is very quiet and the cpu doesn’t go over 75°C max so far.”

With battery, this laptop weighs 6.6 pounds. The charger (with wire) is somewhere between 0.5 and 1 pound, so the total weight would be 7 – 7.5 pounds.

        Thank you for fast response,
May i ask one more question, How is the Screen Quality, I have heard that msi apache 6th gen has better screen quality , and asus has IPs yes but colors Like NT screen

Haven’t used the laptop myself, so it’s hard to comment for first-hand experience. This display has IPS panel, which should have better colors than TN panels because of different technology. I don’t know where you heard this IPS screen has the colors of a TN display. Was it a reliable source?

Would be PERFECT if it had a 970m, but a 960m will last a year or 2. Are you able to measure the nit of brightness in the display?

    1. Tech For Pennies Post author

Received reply from ASUS, they told the brightness is around 260 cd/m2.

Hi, i am a little concern about the price, it looks really affordable and it really has some really good features, any reason why it is the price so low?

One thing that keeps the price at bay here would be the graphics card. The GeForce GTX960M is an upper mid-range card, not really a super engine like the GTX980M. The GTX960M wouldn’t allow you to use maxed out settings with most demanding games, like The Witcher 3, and receive enjoyable frame rates. However, the more expensive GTX980M allows that. You can also take a look at a benchmark comparison of those two cards, showing the enormous difference they have.

I’ve been super interested in that Acer one that you linked.. i know the previous models has a lot of people complaining about CPU throttling, but I have not heard much about the new one and how it fairs.

Anyone know if this notebook have M.2 port or if I can add an SSD?

    Reply
    1. Tech For Pennies Post author

Yes, there is M.2 (form factor 2280) port in this model, so you can add a solid-state drive.

Thanks! for your answer, Asus don´t say that in his web page.
you know if this model support ssd 2.5″ and the hard disk 1tb at the same time?

        1. Tech For Pennies Post author

There’s space for one 2.5″ drive, either SSD or hard drive. In addition, there’s one M.2 slot. So no, this model doesn’t support 2.5″ SSD and hard drive at the same time – but you can indeed install SSD to the M.2 slot and keep the HDD in the 2.5″ bay, see?

The screen in GL752VW models has received mainly positive reviews from people who bought them. Both work wonders for gaming, however keep in mind there’s no SSD in the DH71 model – that could be seen as a disadvantage. But the storage drive selection should not affect your FPS, only on the game loading times. Whichever you choose, you can expect top frame rates with high (or ultra) settings on any game.

    Hi all!
Just a quick question, does the laptop come with a M.2 SSD installed ,and if not, not a problem, however I was planning to utilize SSD caching with the included 1Tb HDD, is this possible with this particular laptop and its BIOS configurations.

Hi, this laptop has no M.2 solid-state drive installed – but there’s indeed an empty M.2 slot inside. The only drive installed is a 1TB (2.5″ SATA) hard drive. That drive does not have the SSD cache part, only units known as hybrid hard drives do. So if you want to utilize SSD in this laptop, you need to buy M.2 solid-state drive and install that. Hope this helps!

Does this laptop support PCIe M.2 based SSDs or is it SATA? If so, how many lanes?

It’s M.2 PCI-e slot. Even though ASUS support claims it’s M.2 SATA, many people who actually bought this laptop have confirmed ASUS support is wrong, indeed finding M.2 PCI-e inside.

Hi, the maximum resolution for this laptop’s screen is 1920×1080, so if you’re playing 4K (3840×2160) content it will be downscaled to 1920×1080.

Do you mean the performance of this screen if it’s running downscaled 4K content as 1920×1080? Any lag shouldn’t occur, if by performance we mean that, but of course the 4K content will take more space from storage drive.

Hi, the battery on this model – like on basically any laptop model – can be replaced. However, the battery here can’t be just snapped out from the bottom in one second. To remove the battery on this ASUS, you need to remove the bottom part to get access to the components, including battery. So it takes some effort, but can be done if you’re skilled in this field.

No BluRay player here. Take a look at Details in the bottom: http://store.asus.com/us/item/201510AM170008066/A18486. It says

      Optical Drive
      DL DVD±RW/CD-RW

Which means the optical drive only works with CDs and DVDs. If you want BluRay functionality, you need to get external BluRay drive and plug it to the laptop’s USB port.

Just wanted to know for reference would i be able to replace the graphics card in this to a 980m?

Unfortunately, it looks like the graphics card is soldered on motherboard, so you can’t replace it.

Can the video card memory be increased from 2 gig to 4 gig, or is the memory soldered?

Hi Jim. The graphics card is soldered on board, so can’t be upgraded.

I have read elsewhere that this particular card with only 2 GB of memory will achieve somewhere around 85% to 95% of the performance given by the same card with 4 GB memory. That probably explains why most computers that come with this card have on 2 GB on it. The price-to-performance ratio for the extra 2 GB is pretty poor — and most people would probably never notice the difference in performance. So, enjoy your machine and be glad that you didn’t spend extra money for something that you might not even notice. :-)

Sure it will. GTX 960M is quite a good card. You could get probably 30FPS on Fallout 4 even if you used high settings.
