There’s a demand for affordable gaming laptops. Is ASUS ROG GL552VW-DH71 one of them? Well, surely its price isn’t too high and the components look like gamer-friendly: i7 processor, 16GB RAM and a dedicated GeForce graphics card. Whether it’s a recommended choice or not will be discussed below.

General performance

Hmm, let’s think for a while what kind of programs could ASUS ROG GL552VW-DH71 run. Let’s see, it has Intel Core i7-6700HQ processor (quad-core, 2.6-3.5GHz, 7800 CPU Mark) and 16GB RAM installed. That’s way too much for typical programs such as web browser and light multimedia use – such components are good in the hands of professionals who might like to multitask and operate heavyweight applications, such as full programming environments with virtualization software etc. running.

So the general performance is excellent, although it’s somewhat limited by the storage drive choice. You’ll get a “good old” terabyte hard drive here, sporting 7200RPM spindle speed, so SSD-like transfer rates are sadly not present. For loading up the system and programs quicker such a solid-state drive would be a good choice. Luckily the laptop features M.2 connector (M.2 2280 SATA) so SSD could be added there. One drive people have successfully installed is Samsung 850 EVO M.2.

By the way, memory is 16GB with two 8GB sticks. Two sockets reside on mainboard and both are taken, but as the RAM type is DDR4 you can expand to 32GB with two 16GB sticks.

Suitability for gaming

Gaming is the bread and butter of ASUS ROG GL552VW-DH71. It’s equipped with nice GeForce GTX960M (yeah, the mobile version) that uses 2GB GDDR5-type memory. You’ll find that a lot better than typical budget laptops with integrated graphics. To be honest, you can pretty much keep high settings and 1080p resolution and expect at least playable frame rates with any game. For example, GTA 5 should get ~50 frames per second and The Witcher 3 ~30FPS using those settings.

The display should work for gaming as well. It’s a 15.6″ screen with IPS panel type and Full HD resolution. Because of the GTX960M dedicated card you shouldn’t need to decrease resolution here. Touch screen it’s not, but players don’t often care, especially considering the operating system is Windows 10.

Connections and ports

It’s the regular set of connections you’ll get, ASUS ROG GL552VW-DH71 features three USB ports of which two are USB 3.0. Video outputs include HDMI-out only, however it’s good for connecting most external monitors.

DVD burner is also there if you have some older games to be installed from discs. The SD card slot might not be so useful for gamers, but it provides you with extra local storage and a convenient way to transfer data from some devices (like digital cameras).

This thing can be connected to Internet using 802.11ac Wireless adapter or RJ-45 port. Bluetooth 4.0 is supported as well.

There’s 1.2MP webcam waiting for you to keep up with your gaming pals on video chats.

Some other things to keep in mind?

Despite having heavyweight components, ASUS ROG GL552VW-DH71 isn’t so heavy unit, it weighs just 5.6 pounds. However, the 48Whrs 4-cell battery isn’t likely to last long. If you’re playing a game, one or two hours is what you’re going to get.

Keyboard type is backlit and numpad is available as well.

ASUS ROG GL552VW-DH71 is one of the better laptops if you’re on budget but still want to play. And by playing I mean the latest games using higher setting and perhaps even 1080 resolution. The GTX960M card can take care of all that, you’ll get smooth frame rates above 40-50 with the majority of games. Also the Core i7 processor coupled with 16GB RAM will help you a lot. The price is quite good considering what you’re getting here; hence this unit is a recommended choice for all the “cheap” gamers out there.

You forgot to mention that it has a M.2 SATA 3 port and it is easily accessible by removing the upgrade back panel which exposes the HDD bay, ram and M.2 port. When i say back panel i don’t mean the entire back panel of the laptop, i believe its 1 screw and Tada! M.2 port doesn’t contain a screw therefore you will have to order one from amazon.
To me, if this model didn’t have an M.2 port i was never buying it.(Just incase theres anyone like me out there)

Thanks for the valuable info Jerome! M.2 port is indeed one of the selling points these days.

You mentioned that “One drive people have successfully installed is Samsung 850 EVO M.2” , but ASUS tech support told me that ROG GL552VW supports 256 GB SSD maximum. I saw Samsung EVO M.2 SSD listing includes: 250 GB, 500 GB, and 1 TB on Amazon, so will Samsung 850 EVO M.2 500 GB work with GL 552VW? It should work, right? I really want to get a Samsung SSD at least 500 GB for my ROG GL552VW.

That’s a good question indeed. Did the ASUS tech support give you any particular reason? I don’t know any limitation of the M.2 interface that would occur at 256GB. So what to do? Buy the 512GB drive from a seller that accepts returns. Try to install the drive and see what happens. If it doesn’t work, send the unit back. For that reason, handle the drive with extreme care!
