There is a lot to be said and done about buying the perfect laptop for you. You need to know exactly your needs and budget to tailor the ideal notebook for your use. But what if you are a demanding user, a heavyweight gamer? In that case, you have to pay a lot – a general-use notebook won’t cut it. Instead, you need a gamer laptop like ASUS ROG GL502VS-DS71. Below you’ll find my professional opinion about the computer, enjoy!
It’s good for gaming right?
Nvidia’s GeForce series is known to make players happy, especially the cards that belong to the higher end of that family. In ASUS ROG GL502VS-DS71, the graphics card is GeForce GTX 1070 with 8GB GDDR5 memory. It’s an excellent gaming card, only superseded by Nvidia’s pinnacle, the GTX 1080. Anyway, this GTX 1070 does a good job even beyond Full HD gaming (yet the maximum resolution here is 1080p). Take a look:
– Doom, ultra and Full HD, +80FPS
– The Witcher 3, ultra and Full HD, +90FPS
– Battlefield, ultra and Full HD, +100FPS
Let enjoyable gaming sessions happen! Any title you throw at this will run with maximum settings and high resolutions without issues.
Does it have decent performance?
Processing power is one of the bright sides of ASUS ROG GL502VS-DS71. Inside, you will find Intel Core i7-7700HQ. It’s a quad-core unit from the end of 2016, possessing a 2.8GHz clock speed and 3.8GHz turbo boost for you to enjoy. Keeping in mind the i7-7500U is a laptop processor it gets a top-notch ~9000 score in CPU Mark, beating most other notebook processors. Hence, do not be afraid of slow processing performance, it will not happen here!
Sixteen gigabytes is starting to be the default gaming laptop memory these days. Indeed, also the ASUS has that. There is 16GB DDR4 memory installed in the rig. I’m not sure if it’s one or two sticks – if only one, then you could double the RAM by upgrading.
Sometimes you see a great storage set-up in laptops, exactly like in this ASUS. You will get a one-terabyte 7200RPM hard drive here. It can store all your files easily. But fear not, also a solid-state drive can be found inside, a 256GB M.2 SATA3 one. I believe both of the units are upgradeable if you want more oomph.
How about ports and connections?
Ports are rather plenty in ASUS ROG GL502VS-DS71. For the bulk of your devices included are three USB 3.0 connectors. They might suffice for you, but keep in mind there is also one USB 3.1 Type-C port. You can use it with many things, such as monitors, with the right kind of adapter.
That being said, also one dedicated video port is found on this device. It’s the good old HDMI-output. To that you can connect an external monitor if you wish to use the notebook through one!
The computer is lacking just one thing, and that is a DVD burner. Get an external one if that’s an issue for you. SD card slot is available nonetheless.
The networking side of things is well thought. Welcoming you is a Gigabit RJ-45 port for connection with cable, and a WiFi adapter (802.11ac standard 2×2) for the wireless joy. Bluetooth 4.1 works here as well.
Other important features and benefits
Gaming notebooks tend to come with beautiful displays. I’m sure it’s also true in ASUS ROG GL502VS-DS71. The screen size is the common 15.6 inches and it supports 1920×1080 resolution. That is fine, although some players are demanding these days and want resolution more than 1080p – such as Quad HD. There are also other candies available such as high 120hz refresh rate and G-Sync support. Viewing angles are around 160 degrees.
The webcam on top of the screen captures high-quality 1.2MP video, very good for YouTube filming etc.
The battery on the unit is a 4-cell 76Whrs giant. Well, despite having good specs, don’t expect it to last all day. I’d say you’re looking at 2 hours maximum when gaming, and maybe two times that when surfing the web etc.
The keyboard is of course illuminated, just as it is in any gaming laptop.
Summing it up
ASUS ROG GL502VS-DS71 comes with high price and excellent performance for most gamers I would dare to say. There’s very little the Core i7 processor and GTX 1070 card could not do for you. Even people with Triple A games or resource-intensive software such as Photoshop find the processor and other components enough. The display is also great thanks to the 1080p screen and other goodies. I think this rig can do anything a gamer is looking for – hence I can recommend it no problems!
