Let’s see, so you’re a gamer and want a laptop for your activities? Not a problem, but you should have a fat wallet for that. Notebooks meant for gaming cost a lot, and ASUS ROG G752VY-DH72 is no exception. It anyway features all things important for a player: powerful processor, top of the line graphics card and plenty of RAM. But does it really make sense to buy it or not…?
ASUS ROG G752VY-DH72 is equipped with one of the best laptop gaming engines to date: GeForce GTX980M with 4GB dedicated GDDR5 memory. You will have no issues playing any game whatsoever, even on ultra settings and 1920×1080 resolution you would get around 40 frames per second on Grand Theft Auto 5. Another example, The Witcher 3 gives more than 30FPS on similar settings. It’s a very strong card, and there is no danger of lagging with any current game.
As you can very well guess, also the general performance of this ASUS is top-notch. The processor is a nice 6th generation Intel Core i7-6700HQ, it’s actually one of the better CPUs with over 8000 CPU Mark score. There are four cores that possibly help you with multitasking, and the clock speed varies between 2.6GHz and 3.5GHz. Indeed, the i7-6700HQ is a very solid processor and you’re going to like it for gaming and professional use for sure.
I really think the 32GB DDR4 memory is bit overkill. Even sixteen gigabytes would be a lot. Anyway, as this laptop is a premium one, the RAM splurge can be understood. At least you’ll never need to install more, but if for some reason you want, that is possible: the current RAM comes on two 16GB sticks and there are two free for expansion, up to 64GB.
Two storage drives are included. One is a regular, splatter-based 1TB 7200RPM hard drive. And more importantly, the other is a 256GB solid-state connected to M.2 slot. You can change both drives if you want, but I don’t see much logic in that: you already have the best of the worlds: raw storage and huge performance.
Ports and connections
You’ll find plenty of ports in ASUS ROG G752VY-DH72; for example there’s the new USB 3.1 (Type C) connector that supports various standards, such as Thunderbolt. Four regular USB 3.0 connectors are also at your disposal. The HDMI-out can be used to hook up an external monitor if you’re not happy with the laptop’s own.
A wonderful thing for some, this ASUS comes with a Blu-Ray burner. It of course works with CDs and DVDs too, but not many notebooks have a BR drive anyway.
There’s also a slot for SD and MMC type memory cards, uploading photos and other files through that is convenient.
Networking interfaces are everything one could ask for: a dual-band 802.11A/C WiFi + Bluetooth 4.0 card adapter and a Gigabit RJ-45 connector for cable.
The webcam supports 1.2MP resolution, it’s sufficient for video chatting with your gaming pals.
Other important things
It looks to me that the display of ASUS ROG G752VY-DH72 is pretty decent, it’s a big 17.3″ screen with 1920×1080 maximum resolution and IPS panel type (= greater viewing angles compared to cheaper TN panels). There’s also G-Sync that’s hardware supported, probably good news for gamers.
One of the unfortunate things, this ASUS weighs a ton, 9.5 pounds to be exact. You’re not going to travel with it a lot. Also the 6-cell 66Whrs battery won’t last forever, your best bet is 4 hours if surfing the web and two if gaming.
The keyboard is of course backlit, as you could expect from a notebook this pricey.
Summing it up
There is one excellent reason to get ASUS ROG G752VY-DH72, and that is if you’re an avid gamer with extra money and requirements for top FPS no matter the game. Because this laptop can surely run any game, even the heavyweight ones from 2015-2016, without lag and slowing down. The only bad side is the huge cost; it’s a ridiculously expensive model. However, considering what you’re getting, the value is pretty decent here I must say!
